About the Author
Kylene Beers, Ed.D., is a former middle school teacher who has turned her commitment to adolescent literacy and struggling readers into the major focus of her research, writing, speaking, and teaching. She is author of the best-selling When Kids Can't Read/What Teachers Can Do, co-editor (with Bob Probst and Linda Rief) of Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice, and co-author (with Bob Probst) of Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading and Reading Nonfiction, Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies all published by Heinemann. She taught in the College of Education at the University of Houston, served as Senior Reading Researcher at the Comer School Development Program at Yale University, and most recently acted as the Senior Reading Advisor to Secondary Schools for the Reading and Writing Project at Teachers College. Kylene has published numerous articles in state and national journals, served as editor of the national literacy journal, Voices from the Middle, and was the 2008-2009 President of the National Council of Teachers of English. She is an invited speaker at state, national, and international conferences and works with teachers in elementary, middle, and high schools across the US. Kylene has served as a consultant to the National Governor's Association and was the 2011 recipient of the Conference on English Leadership outstanding leader award. Kylene is now a consultant to schools, nationally and internationally, focusing on literacy improvement with her colleague and co-author, Bob Probst.

Robert (Bob) Probst is the author of Response and Analysis, he is coeditor (with Kylene Beers and Linda Rief) of Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice, and coauthor (with Kylene Beers) of Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading, and Reading Nonfiction, Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies all published by Heinemann. Bob has also published over one hundred articles, chapters, and monographs in national and international publications. Bob began his teaching career as high school English teacher and then became a supervisor of English for a large district in Maryland. He spent most of his academic career at Georgia State University where he is now Professor Emeritus of English Education. After retiring from Georgia State University, he served as a research fellow for Florida International University. Bob is now a consultant to schools, nationally and internationally, focusing on literacy improvement. He works in schools with his colleague and co-author, Kylene Beers. Bob has served as a member on the Conference on English Board of Directors, an NCTE journal columnist, a member of the national advisory board to American Reading Company, and a member of the NCTE Commission on Reading. In 2004 he was awarded the NCTE's Exemplary Leadership Award, presented by the Conference on English Leadership.

Tests Do Not Measure True Intelligence

This was a great text. It proves that testing is not the best way to measure a persons intelligence and in fact testing is about memory and not intelligence at all. Higher order thinking assessments are better suited to determine intelligence. Good read.

Had never read a terrible textbook...until THIS ONE

This was used for Philosophy 191 as a textbook. I feel bad about giving a negative review rather than no review at all, but I would have liked a heads up before experiencing this level of frustration.
I had never read a poorly written textbook until this one. It is essential that you are a clear communicator in this subject. I think there was one main author and the other just proofread because it's hard to believe two people could be consistently scatterbrained throughout the entire text. As an example, in one of the later chapters, the author basically uses at least four paragraphs to discuss a very simple concept that needed about two statements at most. Rather than introducing a subject, hammering it out with examples and explanation, the author would touch on it, give a poor definition, then discuss other issues, mention it again a few paragraphs down, then the next chapter would have a modified version of that same defined term.
At end of course, I emailed several other students about an issue in the course and mentioned (offhand) the poorly written textbook we suffered through. They didn't have to respond to that side mention, but they did. This was definitely a shared experience.
Philosophy is an arduous stretch for the brain, so teaching clearly is a requirement. Maybe the author(s) could get away with writing so poorly in other classes, but I felt the text hindered rather than helped the education process. The only helpful method was the true stories they used to demonstrate concepts. That was at least a helpful addition when coupled with the professor's teaching.

Be Warned - if this is on your reading list, you are headed for a rough semester.

Abysmal.
This is a terrible book. It is inconceivable that this poorly written horror ever got the thumbs up for publishing. If this is the final draft the earlier versions must have verged on incomprehensible nonsense. Why did the agent ok it? Why the hell did the publishers let it pass? This work is of such substandard quality it should be credited to Alan Smithee.
Specifically, the examples used to illustrate the main points of her book are frequently less clear than her rambled, wordy expositions. She feels able to select examples from science to criticize, while at the same time having a critical lack of knowledge on the topic. In one instance she tells us that it would be impossible for Copernicus to stand anywhere in the solar system and see all our planets in orbit, yet anywhere close to a right angle from the ecliptic would suffice just fine!
A series of badly chosen examples, a superior attitude coupled with a wholly inferior product, and a writing style as pleasant as wading through a half full sewer add up to a woeful product unfit for any class, except as an example of what not to produce.
If your syllabus has this book on the reading list, implore your professor to change it before you start your semester. And if they won't, make a point of highlighting every problem, every ham-fisted sentence, and ensure they have to repeat the point every ill considered illustration is allegedly making.

Great Book - The Kindle version appears not to be as complete as the hard copy

I purchased the Kindle version. The book is a great study guide that follows the class. I would give the book 5 stars - however - the Kindle version of the book is not complete. For example, there are study guides that are accessible via a web site. To access the guides, you need to refer to the back of the book for a code. The Kindle version does not have this (or I could not locate it). I have sent one of the authors an email to see if I could access the guide but have not heard back.

I found this to be a good study guide, in combination with other resources. The book was much too short and light on some topics to be your only source for the exam. Practical experience and a firm knowledge of all topics, especially encryption and the TCP, IP, and UDP protocols are a must.

Good book as a supplemental study guide

This book was ok. It should not be used as the Primary study guide for the exam. I used the All-In-One CEH study guide by Matt Walker which I felt did a much better job explaining in detail the topics. The Official review guide however did go into a few areas that the Walker's book omitted, which is ok because the version I took didn't cover them anyway. Overall, the book is ok but I would only use this as a supplementary study guide to another form of studying.
