About the Author
Pico Iyer is a British-born essayist and novelist long based in both California and Japan. He is the author of numerous books about crossing cultures, among them Video Night in Kathmandu, The Lady and the Monk, and The Global Soul. An essayist for Time since 1986, he also publishes regularly in Harper’s, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, and many other publications across the globe.

Marc Kushner is a practicing architect who splits his time between designing buildings at HWKN, the architecture firm he cofounded, and amassing the world’s architecture on the website he runs, Architizer.com. Both have the same mission: to reconnect the public with architecture. Kushner’s core belief is that architecture touches everyone—and everyone is a fan of architecture—even if they don’t know it yet. New forms of media empower people to shape the built environment, and that means better buildings that make better cities that make a better world.

Chip Kidd is a designer/writer in New York City. His book cover designs for Alfred A. Knopf, where he has worked nonstop since 1986, have helped create a revolution in the art of American book packaging. He is the recipient of the National Design Award for Communications, as well as the Use of Photography in Design award from the International Center of Photography. Kidd has published two novels, The Cheese Monkeys and The Learners, and is also the author of Batman: Death By Design and the coauthor and designer of True Prep, the sequel to the beloved Official Preppy Handbook. Enjoyable short reads

My husband loves TED talks so when I spotted these new TED books sets at the beginning of the year I knew they would be a great gift for him. They are nice and short, while still being thought provoking and fascinating. He travels quite a bit and is always looking for interesting reads to fill small periods of time. Love the small size and the nice construction quality of the books, these sets would make ideal gifts for the intellectual friends in your life that have you stumped as to gift ideas. I will be back to buy the other two sets, and I hope that they release more in the future! At our home we believe that the best decor and adornment is books, and these are a fun addition to our home "decor". :)

"Epicureans and Stoics" is a collection of passages from several legendary philosophers from the times of the Greek and Roman Empires, their brilliant thoughts of the time and how they impact today's world. Highly recommended collection of short stories

Much like its namesake, the dark and twisted short stories in Kevin Brown's Death Roll collection sink their teeth into you and won't let go. I'm on my second read of this collection and I suspect it won't be my last. Brown covers the range of human emotions from fear, dread, revenge, love, and jealousy in a collection of stories that come highly recommended. Don't let this book pass you by.

I'm a French tutor and I'm presently using this book with a husband and wife who are beginners intermediate. They love the book as it teaches everyday, conversational French, still making notes of more formal expressions. As the title suggests, this is a fast method for adults.

I do love his paintings though

This is not a book for the begginer. You need to be quite experienced. It mostly gives simple instruction on a few pieces of paintings. Not what I expected. I am an intermediate painter.it was not excepptionaly helpful to m. I do love his paintings though.

What a beautiful book. The Forests are very well done and the tracings are included in simple form and while it does not give you step by step instruction, it does give you some description of how special items were done. I have not had time to do any of these yet but look forward to trying them soon.

A great book. Highly recommended.

I just love this book. It has everything a watercolourist requires to inspire them including the helpful outlines (just in case your drawing skills are a bit rusty). I searched the internet to find an artist that appealed to me with their style of painting and Geoff certainly does that. Not too loose and not too tight. How lucky am I. The book is full of great paintings from which I know I will learn many of the watercolour techniques. It is also a great book to simply read and enjoy in the moment. I have Geoff's Top Tips as well. Another excellent buy. Thanks Geoff.

Velthuis shows that prices, far from being abstract numbers, convey rich meanings to trading partners that extend well beyond the works of art. A high price may indicate not only the quality of a work but also the identity of collectors who bought it before the artist's reputation was established. Such meanings are far from unequivocal. For some, a high price may be a symbol of status; for others, it is a symbol of fraud.

Whereas sociological thought has long viewed prices as reducing qualities to quantities, this pathbreaking and engagingly written book reveals the rich world behind these numerical values. Art dealers distinguish different types of prices and attach moral significance to them. Thus the price mechanism constitutes a symbolic system akin to language.

Olav Velthuis has worked as Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Konstanz and has been a Visiting Scholar at Princeton University and Columbia University. Currently he writes about economic affairs for the Dutch newspaper "De Volkskrant".

Explaining art world behavior with economic models.

Velthius does a nice job taking the often curious behavior of art world players and explaining them with standard economic models. Why do dealers price primary market paintings at half their auction value? Why does a culture of favoritism and gift giving trump a transparent market model? How do dealers think about pricing the work of an artist for their first gallery show? Through a serious of interviews, data analyses, and observations, Velthius tackles these questions and many more.

The author pays particular attention to the competing worlds of aesthetics and commerce that must uncomfortably coexist in the art world. On the one hand, art world players insist that economic considerations are crass where beauty and scholarship should reign supreme. But at the end of the day, dealers are businesspeople who need to pay rent, support their artists, please collectors, and support themselves.

If you're hoping to use this book to price art or predict future prices, you'll probably be very disappointed. The book makes some very rudimentary empirical observations that should be obvious to anyone even casually involved in the art world (larger paintings are more expensive than smaller paintings for a given artist), but the author concedes that pricing is too idiosyncratic to hope to build anything approaching a robust pricing model.

While this book waxes academic, it should be pretty readable to anyone with a rudimentary background in economics. The art world jargon is kept to relative minimum. If you're looking for a breezy, entertaining read, I'd strongly consider The $12 Million Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art.

Left in the care of his aunt while his father is at sea, 11-year-old Digory Beale is plagued by nightmares of his father dying in a terrible storm. Digory has always been afraid of the sea, preferring to draw when other boys were competing for sailing jobs. When word comes that his father's ship has gone down, it seems that his worst fear has been realized. Digory must set out for Plymouth to learn his father's fate. His aunt tells him not to return unless he finds his father alive. With eleven children of her own, she can't afford another mouth to feed. Digory and his 9-year-old brother Cubby (who decides to follow Digory rather than stay with their aunt) face a difficult journey with little food, no money, and dwindling hope that their father is still alive.

In Plymouth, Digory and Cubby receive the crushing news that there were no survivors from their father's ship. With their hopes of reuniting with their father dashed, the boys are alone and scared. Just when they think things can't get any worse, Digory and Cubby are framed for stealing. A man named Henry Winstanley intercedes on their behalf and this chance meeting will drastically alter Digory's life.

Henry Winstanley takes the boys to be servants at his home in Essex, but Winstanley's home is no ordinary country estate. An engineer with a fondness for gadgets, Winstanley has filled his home with many whimsical inventions including a "Flying Chair" (an early version of the roller coaster), a mechanical dragon, and fountains that shoot colored water into the air. When Winstanley discovers Digory's artistic talent, he offers him an apprenticeship. Digory thrives under the engineer's tutelage.

When Winstanley receives news that the Eddystone Lighthouse, a beacon that he designed, is in need of repair after severe storms, he and Digory rush to Plymouth. Digory will finally have to face his fear of the sea in order to assist his beloved mentor.

While Digory and Cubby are fictional characters, Henry Winstanley was real. In 1698, he took on what many thought was an impossible task: construction of a lighthouse off the treacherous Eddystone reef near Plymouth, England. The Eddystone Lighthouse sustained severe damage during its first year of operation and was rebuilt with a modified design. For five years not a single ship was lost to the reef. In 1703, the lighthouse was destroyed during the Great Storm, the worst weather disaster in Britain's history. Henry Winstanley and five others were killed when the lighthouse succumbed to the sea. The Eddystone Lighthouse was later rebuilt, and thanks to Winstanley's vision, thousands of lives have been saved.

Elvira Woodruff has written an exciting and well-researched tale of courage and friendship. The book includes a glossary, a map of England in 1700 highlighting the key locations in the story as well as an extensive author's note about the life and accomplishments of Henry Winstanley. Highly recommended.

My 5th grade son begged me to read this ... Glad I did!

Some of the topics were surprisingly dark for this age group, but that's why they ate it up. I guess 10 and 11 year old boys are ready to start challenging themselves a bit! The story is gripping and well-told, and I enjoyed it all the more when I got to the end and found out that much of it was actually based on true people and events.

the basics

The best compilation of techniques available in English. A bit obsolete, but is the reference I use and the guide I give to my students for teaching the craft. (And I will continue to give them away. as long as I can obtain reasonably priced, used copies via Amazon.)

Sarah Swafford is the founder of Emotional Virtue Ministries (emotionalvirtue.com), and speaks to teens and young adults about how to live a drama-free life. She is the co-host of the EWTN show, At the Heart of Relationships, and is featured in the Chosen confirmation series and the YDisciple youth ministry program. Sarah also works on Special Projects for Catholic Identity for Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, where she and her husband reside with their children.
