Forty-Dollar Buttboy, by Jackman Hill

Travis is a hot college sophomore who loves the ladies, week-end parties, and getting stoned most evenings with his buddies at the dorm—your basic all-around frat dude. But he also has a secret about the special times he shared in high school with one of his fellow jocks. When a summertime romance with his girl back home leads to her getting knocked up, he finds himself without any resources to help her out. All of his money goes to tuition and beer. Where can he get some extra cash?
Then he meets Cameron, an enterprising young man with a very special business plan: they will (mostly) discreetly make themselves available to other boys around campus...the kind of boys who are inclined to have some fun with good-looking guys like Travis and himself. The scheme works because they keep the price low: only forty bucks a pop! Before long, Travis has more than he can handle, and the two friends are off on an adventure of sexual discovery where they learn to enjoy even the dirtiest and most dangerous kinks more than they ever thought was possible...

Everything you could want...
By Kyle Michel Sullivan
Y'know, I'm not usually big on books geared mainly at the prurient needs of us all, but this book has such a fun way of taking you down a preposterous journey of casual sexual encounters for money -- leading up to a massive, all night and all day and all night session with a number of men, all done in a world devoid of any real danger -- it's actually fun just to go along for the ride. The narrator -- I don't think he's ever named in the story -- is going to a tony college thanks to his grandfather, but he winds up making a baby with his girlfriend and needs some quick cash. What better way to do it than to line up with a gorgeous guy named Cameron and make himself available for sex with the gay boys at the school, for $40 a pop (pun intended)? Of course, the narrator's gorgeous, too, and gets to be in major demand and enjoys his encounters more than he expected, but it looks like Cameron's got ideas of his own -- as do a couple of guys known as Otis and Lamont. I gotta say -- this is one of those books that's like rollercoaster sex, all up and down and full of excitement. Everything you could want...if you're wanting a wild and crazy ride.

Fantastic Literary Pornography
By Aryael de Kaprii
SPOILER ALERT!!!

This book was gay porn in print. The author really went there taking the visuals of extreme erotic encounters among men and writing them so well that you as the reader could see it. I was entertained to vast degrees following this narrator Travis, a sophmore in college who was in need of money to pay child support to his girl friend. Sitting in his dorm room with buddy Freddie, the two college guys were smoking weed and chatting about employement opportunities. Then Freddie mentions Cameron -a sexy jock guy, totally hot and totally hetero, that allows other guys to bareback and seed him for cash. In addition he performs oral and allows guys to finish in his mouth. Travis cannot believe what he is hearing and he is even more shocked to learn that Freddie had engaged in some oral activity for cash. Well now Travis is convinced and he goes on about his way, meeting with Cameron and learning the Ins and Outs of being a straight-boy prostitute for gay and bi-curious men.

Travis takes about 6-12 guys per night, and even engages in some serious orgy action. Through out the story he comes to discover that he actually has a craving for the lifestyle and becomes a complete and total hungry bottom.

At a frat party, things get out of control and he discovers more and more sexual fantasies that take him beyond the realm of what he is used too, shockingly he discovers he likes it and wants more. Travis becomes an intense and hot male-hooker and his appetite for being sodomized becomes so extreme that he shoves a dumb-bell up his rectum.

In the end the story takes a nice romantic turn and leaves you the ready with much to fantasize about with Cameron and Travis -still male hookers -but in love with one another.

Great Book, just what I have been looking. No Holds Bared Gay Porn in Print.

Great Job, Mr. Jackman Hill.

The title says it all.
By Menkaure
You have to love that title! There is really nothing more to the story than that. It's about a cash-strapped college kid who fancies himself hetero (even though it's obvious in the first few pages he's not), and turns to whoring to make ends meet. And meet they do! Over and over and over and over again. There is no plot to speak of, just a long, sometimes endless, series of random sexual escapades that culminates in the orgy to end all orgies. A never ending orgy that goes on and on and on until the author manages something I had hereto thought impossible: hot m/m action actually becomes mundane and even a little monotonous. The one thing I can say for the author, is that he knows his way around literary intercourse! The sex in FDB is explicit, steamy, and delectable. It's also repetitious.

Bestselling author Daniel Silva delivers another spellbinding international thriller—one that finds the legendary Gabriel Allon grappling with an ISIS mastermind.

Gabriel Allon, the art restorer, spy, and assassin described as the most compelling fictional creation "since Ian Fleming put down his martini and invented James Bond" (Rocky Mountain News), is poised to become the chief of Israel’s secret intelligence service. But on the eve of his promotion, events conspire to lure him into the field for one final operation. ISIS has detonated a massive bomb in the Marais district of Paris, and a desperate French government wants Gabriel to eliminate the man responsible before he can strike again.

Acclaimed novelist Daniel Silva has thrilled, entertained and educated readers with eighteen thoughtful and gripping spy novels featuring a diverse cast of compelling characters and ingenious plots that have taken them around the globe and back—from the United States to Europe, Russia to the Middle East. Following the success of his smash hit The English Spy, this electrifying thriller showcases Silva’s consummate skill and brilliant imagination, and is sure to be a must read for his multitude of current and future fans.

Wow! What a book!!
By D.G.
I started The Black Widow yesterday and finished it today because I couldn’t put it down – seriously, I only slept 3 hours last night because I had to keep going back to this book. I’ve read every book in Daniel Silva’s Gabriel Allon series, and this is one of the very best. The Black Widow takes the issue of ISIS head-on, dealing with things that have occurred already, and things that could occur, but hopefully won’t. This book really resonated with me because it brings most of the action to the United States for the first time in the Allon series – a nightmare scenario to be sure, but all the more interesting since we’re the subject. Also, the plot line of this book is well developed, crystal clear, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The book starts with a major act of terror by ISIS in France. In order to inherit a previously unknown Van Gogh painting willed to him by a prominent friend killed in the attack, the French government wants Gabriel to find the perpetrators. This leads the Office team to recruit a woman doctor in Jerusalem and train her to infiltrate ISIS. It’s discovered that a major ISIS strike in the United States is imminent, and the intelligence services of Israel, Jordan, France, England, and the United States work together to try to stop it from occurring. Writing from Gabriel Allon’s Israeli perspective, Mr. Silva is blunt in characterizing the strengths and weaknesses of the countries intrinsic to the story, including ours. He is so well-informed and prescient about what the bad guys of the world are up to, that whenever I read any of Mr. Silva’s books I wish they were required reading for everyone in government. That all this brilliant insight is given to us in the form of a story so well-written and engaging is Mr. Silva’s unique talent. I even devour the author’s notes and acknowledgements – even these are interesting. I can’t say any more than this – if international intrigue and a great story are things you enjoy, this book will give it to you in spades. Buy the book – it’s great!

THE BEST YET IN THE GABRIEL ALLON SERIES!
By A Journey Without Map
When our key operative in secret Israeli-intelligence, Gabriel Allon, was first introduced by bestselling author Daniel Silva in The Kill Artist in 2004, I never expected the protagonist to outlast his contemporaries. He easily did that and not only outlived them but is getting toug her and better. In the space of just twelve years, Daniel Silva churned out Gabriel Allon thrillers at a frenetic pace, taking the total to sixteen exciting novels – one every nine months - leaving the readers breathless with the pleasure of reading and anticipation. With each new installment, Gabriel Allon is growing stronger and there’s no stopping him. The latest - The Black Widow - the sixteenth in the Gabriel Allon series is one of the best thrillers I have read in recent months.

The Black Widow by Daniel Silva takes the series to a new level as Gabriel Allon stands at a crossroad. He is no longer the same person. With the cycle of life catching up on him, he is happily married to Chiara, who recently gave birth to twins - Raphael, and Irene - he seems the average normal husband-dad next door. His field days are almost and he is set to take over as the new director in the Office. But when massive bombings ripped through a Jewish neighborhood in Paris, he is called upon to render field service one more time. With the same steely determination and strength, one is transported to Paris, Jerusalem, England, and the United States and back again as Gabriel Allon planned and executed a manhunt for the perpetrators. As the setting crisscrossed cities, countries and continents, Daniel Silva raised the tempo with each unfolding scene, taking the reader on a thrill ride that never relents. Several new characters are also introduced. Gabriel Allon recruited a young female called Natalie Mizrahi to infiltrate the ISIS network. While the bad guys play a crucial role in much of Silva’s novels, The Black Widow has a villain who’s a class apart from the rest, a character that many readers will love to hate.

I’m a huge fan of author Daniel Silva and his fictional character Gabriel Allon. I have read all the books in the series. While some of them are truly outstanding, there have been some mediocre ones as well, though their capacity to entertain remained. Yet, of all the books in the series, The Black Widow is definitely the best. The characters are formidable. The plot is mounted on a lavish scale and author Daniel Silva’s writing is as sharp as ever, if not better. What makes the book so special is not just the twists and turns and the suspense and thrills but the refinement with which the story is told. There are no grey areas to doubt the authenticity of his description and setting. Marked by political trickery and driven by his passion to avenge, there is no dull moment reading The Black Widow by Daniel Silva.

EXACTLY the same plot as the last 6 Allon books.
By PG Sly
It's amazing, the plots in this series are EXACTLY THE SAME!!
- brutal attack(s) by Islamic terrorists
- Israeli service asked to track them down
- Allon and his team recruit a civilian to infiltrate the terrorist organization; the civilian initially refuses, but then relents
- the civilian is successful, at first, but then the Israeli plot is ultimately discovered and the civilian captured
- Allon and his team rescue the civilian and kill the terrorists, but no before more attacks take place.

Remarkably, even though i know the outline of the story before starting on page one, I still read all of Silva's novels and find them enjoyable. But it's getting tiresome. - he's even recycling dialogue - so perhaps Silva needs to think of something original next time.

Renegade Dreams: Living through Injury in Gangland Chicago, by Laurence Ralph

Every morning Chicagoans wake up to the same stark headlines that read like some macabre score: “13 shot, 4 dead overnight across the city,” and nearly every morning the same elision occurs: what of the nine other victims? As with war, much of our focus on inner-city violence is on the death toll, but the reality is that far more victims live to see another day and must cope with their injuries—both physical and psychological—for the rest of their lives.Renegade Dreamsis their story. Walking the streets of one of Chicago’s most violent neighborhoods—where the local gang has been active for more than fifty years—Laurence Ralph talks with people whose lives are irrecoverably damaged, seeking to understand how they cope and how they can be better helped.

Going deep into a West Side neighborhood most Chicagoans only know from news reports—a place where children have been shot just for crossing the wrong street—Ralph unearths the fragile humanity that fights to stay alive there, to thrive, against all odds. He talks to mothers, grandmothers, and pastors, to activists and gang leaders, to the maimed and the hopeful, to aspiring rappers, athletes, or those who simply want safe passage to school or a steady job. Gangland Chicago, he shows, is as complicated as ever. It’s not just a warzone but a community, a place where people’s dreams are projected against the backdrop of unemployment, dilapidated housing, incarceration, addiction, and disease, the many hallmarks of urban poverty that harden like so many scars in their lives. Recounting their stories, he wrestles with what it means to be an outsider in a place like this, whether or not his attempt to understand, to help, might not in fact inflict its own damage. Ultimately he shows that the many injuries these people carry—like dreams—are a crucial form of resilience, and that we should all think about the ghetto differently, not as an abandoned island of unmitigated violence and its helpless victims but as a neighborhood, full of homes, as a part of the larger society in which we all live, together, among one another.

Review
“Renegade Dreamsis atour de force—extremely well written and engaging, and replete with original insights. Once I began reading Ralph’s book I had a difficult time putting it down. His field research is fascinating. And his explicit discussion of the interconnections of inner-city injury with government, community institutions, as well as how it is related to historical and social processes, is a major contribution.” (William Julius Wilson, author of The Truly Disadvantaged: The Inner City, the Underclass, and Public Policy)

“Although it lacks the easy narrative of many traditional ethnographies, this is precisely the book’s strength. There is no convenient valorisation of the ordinary extraordinariness of the lives portrayed here. Their dreams are shown to be chaotic, complex and contradictory. Just like life in ‘Eastwood.’” (Times Higher Education)

“Too many scholarly and popular takes on African Americans’ lives and life chances are predicated on assumptions about cultural inadequacies or even genetic inferiorities, on the idea that black people all around the world are little more than damaged goods—to be pitied or punished.] Ralph’s thought-provoking book wonderfully demonstrates how and why human beings continue to survive—and even thrive—in the face of incessant injury and attack. His Chicago is peopled by characters we’ve seen before (gangstas and grandmas, old heads and youth workers, pastors and principals, activists and addicts), but they breathe and bounce throughout his pages like more than just rehashed stock figures in some ongoing morality play about urban black pathology. Thoroughly researched and powerfully told, Renegade Dreams is a paradigm-shifting anthropological rejoinder to popular stereotypes and scholarly cant about ‘inner-city violence,’ its causes, and its aftermath.” (John L. Jackson Jr., author of Thin Description: Ethnography and the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem)

“Astounding in its clarity and groundbreaking in its power,Renegade Dreamsis as miraculous as the efforts of its all-American characters to remake life and invent a future out of injury. The textures and rhythms of Ralph’s realist narrative are charged with critical insight and transcendental significance, making ethnography into a work of art.” (Joo Biehl, author of Vita: Life in a Zone of Social Abandonment)

“In Renegade Dreams,Ralph has achieved what few ethnographers, investigative journalists, and drive-by sociologists ever do: a radical empathy for his subjects that refuses to impose a colonial worldview. At the heart of this book is a fierce utopian sensibility expressed by the dogged optimism of Chicago residents—felled by bullets and injured in a thousand ways—but who insist on participating in our aspiration society. Young men in wheelchairs, bodies half-dead, glide like rolling zombies in our mind’s eye and yet leap from these pages with life and vigor. Their dreams carry forth in politics, play, poetry, and prose. They live in defiance of statistical narratives of the violent isolated ghetto. Theoretically rich and superbly written, this book exposes what is hidden in plain sight: the full humanity of people whose lives are greater than the sum of their pain and peril and far more connected to ours than we’d like to believe.”
(Khalil Gibran Muhammad, author of The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America)

This book sits comfortably among the best ethnographies of the last two decades
By Anonymous
This book sits comfortably among the best ethnographies of the last two decades. Ralph's debut makes one think at times of the most literarily stunning passages in Joo Biehl's Vita. This is a beautifully written book, and it should appeal to a wide audience far beyond anthropology and urban sociology. It represents a great step forward for US-based anthropology and writing writ large in the social sciences. For anyone with interests in urban studies and urban anthropology/sociology, the American ghetto, the city of Chicago, gang studies, disability studies, or simply great writing, this book is not to be missed.

Lucy in the Sky soars about the rest!
By N. Rivera
I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK! Perfect beach read.
We meet Lucy who is about to embark on a trip back to her home country of Australia from her now home, England to see her two bestfriends get married to one another. But right before takeoff, she receives a mystery text that her boyfriend has been sleeping with another girl... four times in the past month! and it just goes from there!
I devoured this one in two days. Would have been one day if I didn't have to sleep... and go to work. :P
I just adore british chicklit. There's just something so charming about the culture that I adore and always enjoy reading. I can just hear the accents as I'm reading. But THIS book makes it even better by throwing aussie in the mix! Hottttt!

Paige Toon's style very much reminds me of one of my favorites, sophie kinsella. The relatable main character, the dreaaaamy leading man, the humor, the wit, the ease of reading through the dialogue. But Toon has one up on Kinsella. I actually didn't know how this one would end.

Most chick-lit I've read, I find myself reading happily towards the end that I know is coming. If you're lucky enough to get a chance to read Toon's debut novel, you'll find yourself going back and forth with how you think it would end. I know I did. I knew how i wanted it to end, but Toon just worked the characters so well that I wouldn't be surprised if Lucy changed her mind in the end. I adored the characters that Toon had created. And the romance was almost unbearable. My heart was definitely feeling everything that Lucy was feeling. When her heart fluttered, so did mine. When her heart was breaking, so was mine. It was an emotional rollercoaster I didn't want to get off of. Her relationship with James was definitely believable, and I could understand why she was still with him. and i just ADORED nathan. he was deliciously drawn up. mmm. yumm. i'm thinkin i need to go to australia and find myself a hot aussie surfer.
Toon is definitely a talented writer.
I'm very excited to get a chance to read Toon's next novel. =)

Instantly Likable
By Lauren G
Lucy loves her boyfriend James, but just as she's about to get on a flight to watch her best friends get married in Australia, she gets a very disturbing text message that hints that he may not be as faithful as she thinks. Distraught in Australia, she takes comfort in her friends' happiness and turns her sights onto the surfer (and best friend's brother) Nathan. The complete opposite of lawyer James, Nathan is carefree and fun. Back in London Lucy has a choice - stay with James or pine for Nathan, who's far away. The decision is much harder when James becomes a bit more truthful and Nathan comes to visit. Once again, my best compliment is that I adore all of Toon's characters. They're my friends by the end, people I want to see again. The story is told very well and is far from any other chick lit. Toon never stays to the same tired plot of boy meets girl, they get together, something draws them apart, they're back together within the last few pages. She shows her variety and keeps the reader on their toes. The book was fun, fresh, and instantly likable.

Chapter One

1719 (or thereabouts)

I cut off a man’s nose once.

I don’t recall exactly when it was: 1719 or thereabouts. Nor where. But it happened during a raid on a Spanish brig. We wanted her supplies, of course. I pride myself on keeping the Jackdaw well stocked. But there was something else on board too. Something we didn’t have but needed. Someone, to be precise. A ship’s cook.

Our own ship’s cook and his mate were both dead. The cook’s mate had been caught pissing in the ballast, which I didn’t allow and so punished him the traditional way, by making him drink a mug of the crew’s piss. I must admit, I’ve never had it happen before where the mug of punishment piss actually killed the man, but that’s what happened with the cook’s mate. He drank the mug of piss, went to sleep that night and never got up. Cook was all right by himself for a time, but he did like a nip of rum, and after a nip of rum was apt to take the night air on the poop-deck. I’d hear him clomping about on the roof of my cabin, dancing a jig. Until one night I heard him clomping about on the roof of my cabin and dancing a jig—followed by a scream and a splash.

The bell rang and the crew rushed to the deck, where we dropped anchor and lit lanterns and torches, but of Cook there was no sign.

They had lads working with them, of course, but they were just boys, none of them knew how to do anything more culinary-minded than stir the pot or peel some spuds, and we’d been living on raw grub ever since. Not a man among us knew how to do so much as boil a pot of water.

Now, not long back we’d taken a man-o’-war. A tasty little excursion from which we’d bagged ourselves a brand-spanking-new broadside battery and a holdful of artillery: cutlasses, pikes, muskets, pistols, powder and shot. From one of the captured crew, who then became one of my crew, I’d learnt that the Dons had a particular supply ship on which served an especially adept cook. Word was that he’d cooked at court but offended the queen and been banished. I didn’t believe a word of that but it didn’t stop me repeating it, telling the crew we’d have him preparing our meals before the week was out. Sure enough we made it our business to hunt down this particular brig, and when we found it, lost no time in attacking it.

Our new broadside battery came in handy. We drew up alongside and peppered the brig with shot till she broke, the canvas in tatters and the helm splintered in the water.

She was already listing as my crew lashed and boarded her, scuttling over her sides like rats, the air heavy with the stink of powder, the sound of muskets popping and cutlasses already beginning to rattle. I was in among them as always, cutlass in one hand and my hidden blade engaged, the cutlass for melee work, the blades for close finishing. Two of them came at me and I made short of the first, driving my cutlass into the top of his head and slicing his tricorn in half as the blade cleaved his head almost in two. He went to his knees with the blade of my sword between his eyes but the problem was I’d driven it too deep, and when I tried to wrench it free his writhing body came with it. Then the second man was upon me, terror in his eyes, not used to fighting, obviously, and with a flick of the blade I sliced off his nose, which had the desired effect of sending him back with blood spraying from the bloody hole where his beak had been, while I used two hands to finally wrench my cutlass out of the skull of the first attacker and continue the good fight. It was soon over, with as few of their crew dead as possible, me having given out special instructions that on no account was the cook to be harmed—Whatever happens, I’d said, we have to take the cook alive.

As their brig disappeared beneath the water and we sailed away, leaving a fog of powder-smoke and a sea of splintered hull and bobbing bits of broken ship behind us, we gathered their crew on the main deck to flush out the cook, hardly a man among us not salivating, his belly not rumbling, the well-fed look of their crew not lost on us. Not at all.

It was Caroline who taught me how to appreciate good food. Caroline my one true love. In the all-too-brief time we’d spent together she refined my palate, and I liked to think that she’d have approved of my policy towards the repast, and how I’d passed on a love of the finer things to the crew, knowing as I did, partly due to what she’d shown me, that a well-fed man is a happy man, and a happy man is a man less prone to questioning the authority of the ship, which is why in all those years at sea I never had one sniff of mutiny. Not one.

“Here I am,” he said, stepping forward. Except it sounded more like, “Beer I bam,” owing to his bandaged face, where some fool had cut off his nose.

Chapter Two

1711

But anyway, where was I? Caroline. You wanted to know how I met her.

Well, therein lies a tale, as they say. Therein lies a tale. For that I need to go much further back, to a time when I was just a simple sheep-farmer, before I knew anything of Assassins or Templars, of Blackbeard, Benjamin Hornigold, of Nassau or The Observatory, and might never have been any the wiser but for a chance meeting at the Auld Shillelagh one hot summer’s day back in 1711.

The thing is, I was one of those young firebrands who liked a drink even though it got me into a few scrapes. Quite a few . . . incidents, shall we say, of which I’m none too proud. But that’s the cross you have to bear if you’re a little over-fond of the booze; it’s rare to find a drinker with a clean conscience. Most of us will have considered knocking it on the head at one time or another, reforming our lives and perhaps turning to God or trying to make something out of ourselves. But then noon comes around and you know what’s good for that head is another drink, and so you head for the tavern.

The taverns I’m referring to were in Bristol, on the south-west coast of dear old England, where we were accustomed to fierce winters and glorious summers, and that year, that particular year, the year that I first met her, 1711, like I say, I was just seventeen years old.

And, yes—yes, I was drunk when it happened. In those days, you’d have to say I was drunk a lot of the time. Perhaps . . . well, let’s not exaggerate, I don’t want to give a bad account of myself. But perhaps half of the time. Maybe a bit more.

Home was on the outskirts of a village called Hatherton, seven miles outside Bristol, where we ran a small holding keeping sheep. Father’s interests lay with the livestock. They always had, so having me on board had freed him from the aspect of the business he most despised, which was making the trips into town with the merchandise, haggling with merchants and traders, bargaining, cutting deals. As soon as I’d come of age, by which I mean, as soon as I was enough of a man to meet the eye of our business associates and trade as an equal, well, that’s what I did. Father was all too glad to let me do it.

My father’s name was Bernard. My mother, Linette. They hailed from Swansea but had found their way to the West Country when I was ten years old. We still had the Welsh accent. I don’t suppose I minded much that it marked us out as different. I was a sheep-farmer, not one of the sheep.

Father and Mother used to say I had the gift of the gab, and Mother in particular used to tell me I was a good-looking young man, and that I could charm the birds off the trees, and it’s true, even though I do say so myself, I did have a certain way with the ladies. Let’s put it this way: dealing with the wives of the merchants was a more successful hunting-ground than having to barter with their husbands.

How I spent my days would depend on the season. January to May, that was lambing season, our busiest time, when I’d find myself in the barns by sun-up, sore head or not, needing to see whether any ewes had lambed during the night. If they had, then they were taken into one of the smaller barns and put into pens, lambing jugs we called them, where Father would take over, while I was cleaning feeders, filling them up again, changing the hay and water, and Mother would be assiduously recording details of the new births in a journal. Me, I didn’t have my letters then. I do now, of course; Caroline taught me them, along with much else that made me a man, but not back then, so that duty fell to Mother, whose own letters weren’t much better but enough to at least keep a record.

They loved working together, Mother and Father. Even more reason why Father liked me going into town. He and my mother—it was as though they were joined at the hip. I had never seen another two people so much in love and with so little need to make a display of the fact. It was plain to witness that they kept each other going. It was good for the soul to see.

In the autumn we’d bring the rams through to the pasture to graze with the ewes, so that they could go on with the business of producing more lambs for the following spring. Fields needed tending to, fences and walls building and repairing.

In winter, if the weather was very bad, we brought the sheep into the barns, kept them safe and warm, ready for January, when lambing season began.

But it was during summer when I really came into my own. Shearing season. Mother and Father carried out the bulk of it while I made more frequent trips into town, not with carcasses for meat but with my cart laden with wool. In the summer, with even more opportunity to do so, I found myself frequenting the local taverns more and more. You could say I became a familiar sight in the taverns, in fact, in my long, buttoned-up waistcoat, knee-breeches, white stockings and the slightly battered brown tricorn that I liked to think of as being my trade-mark, because my mother said it went well with my hair (which was permanently in need of a cut but quite a striking sandy colour, if I do say so myself).

It was in the taverns I discovered that my gift of the gab was improved after a few ales at noon. The booze, it has that effect, doesn’t it? Loosens tongues, inhibitions, morals. . . . Not that I was exactly shy and retiring when I was sober, but the ale, it gave me that extra edge. Or at least that’s what I told myself at the time. After all, the money from extra sales made as a result of my ale-inspired salesmanship more than covered the cost of the ale in the first place. Or at least that’s what I told myself at the time.

There was something else, too, apart from the foolish notion that Edward in his cups was a better salesman than Edward sober, and that was my state of mind.

Because the truth was, I thought I was different. No, I knew I was different. There were times I’d sit by myself at night and know I was seeing the world in a way that was all my own. I know what it is now but I couldn’t put it into words back then other than to say I felt different.

Either because of that or despite it, I’d decided I didn’t want to be a sheep-farmer all my life. I knew it the first day, when I set foot on the farm as an employee, and not as a child, and I saw myself, then looked at my father, and understood that I was no longer here to play and would soon go home to dream about a future setting sail on the high seas. No, this was my future, and I would spend the rest of my life as sheep-farmer, working for my father, marrying a local girl, siring boys and teaching them to become sheep-farmers, just like their father, just like their grandfather. I saw the rest of my life laid out for me, like neat work-clothes on a bed, and rather than feel a warm surge of contentment and happiness about that fact, it terrified me.

So the truth was, and there’s no way of putting it more gently, and I’m sorry, Father, God rest your soul, but I hated my job. And after a few ales, well, I hated it less, is all I can say. Was I blotting out my dashed dreams with the booze? Probably. I never really thought about it at the time. All I knew was that sitting on my shoulder, perched there like a mangy cat, was a festering resentment at the way my life was turning out—or, worse, actually had turned out.

Perhaps I was a little indiscreet concerning some of my true feelings. I might on occasion have given my fellow drinkers the impression that I felt life had better things in store for me. What can I say? I was young and arrogant and a sot. A lethal combination at the best of times, and these were definitely not the best of times.

“You think you’re above the likes of us, do you?”

I heard that a lot. Or variations of it, at least.

Perhaps it would have been more diplomatic of me to answer in the negative, but I didn’t, and so I found myself in more than my fair share of fights. Perhaps it was to prove that I was better than them in all things, fighting included. Perhaps because in my own way I was upholding the family name. A drinker I might have been. A seducer. Arrogant. Unreliable. But not a coward. Oh no. Never one to shrink from a fight.

It was during the summertime when my recklessness reached its heights; when I would be most drunk and most boisterous, and mainly a bit of a pain in the arse. But on the other hand, all the more likely to help a young lady in distress.

Main story line of the AC game
By Julius Butcher
I'm big fan of Assassin's Creed, I played all the games, currently having fun with the Black Flag episode. Best. Game. Ever. Full of action, secrets to uncover and prizes to collect. So I had high expectations of the book.

It left me with mixed feelings. The story is a nice summary of the main mission. The game itself is quite complex, you can spend a lot of time with side-actions or just being a pirate sinking and plundering ships. It's easy to loose the main thread. This book lead me through the main story. I also learned a lot about Edward Kenway, the main character, his background, his motives, his feelings, which the game doesn't really show.

However, the writing was not that impressive. Most of the time there was telling instead of showing, which cannot draw you into the story deeply enough. The dialog could have been better, the characters talked almost the same way. It didn't spark, if you know what I mean.

The story was inconsistent in places, there were holes between chapters. Also, there were missing bits in action scenes. (For example the hero fell on the ground and the author forgot to tell that he got up, so I found the sword fight awkward until I realized he was on his feet already.)

I don't know if I'm just looking at the book through gamer eyes, but I expected more.

A Suitable Follow-up to Forsaken
By Gregory Cox
As my title says I consider this novel to be a decent companion to Assassin's Cree Forsaken, its prequel in many ways. For as this novel is telling us the story of Edward Kenway, through the writings in his journal to his daughter Jennifer, Forsaken tells the story of Haytham Kenway, Edward's son, through the writings in his journal that he leaves behind for his son, Connor Kenway, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed 3. In this way both stories are tied, with the two, along with the games Assassin's Creed 3 and Assassin's Creed Black Flag, serving to tell the entire Kenway family saga.

I will begin by stating that I found the writing of this novel to be somewhat weaker than its predecessor, which is surprising since they were written by the same person in the exact same first-person format. Specifically, the fighting scenes weren't all as well written, with some parts appearing to be missing. To be clear, when you're playing the game you can obviously see everything that's going on, and therefore nothing needs to be stated. But in a novel it's different. You can't just have a character stab someone with a sword if you haven't mentioned that 1)he has a sword and 2)he drew said sword. Now i'm not going to exaggerate and say that EVERY fight scene has instances like this, where characters will make suddenly make movements and motions without the proper setup, but some do and it can make for clunky writing, ESPECIALLY when this is supposedly a journal being written by the game's main character, and is therefore from his point of view. Doesn't really make sense for him of all people to miss out on things like this.

HOWEVER, it is still a very good novel and something I would suggest to all Assassin's Creed fans. Not only does it serve as a good companion-piece to the game proper, it is also just a very entertaining read, revealing various facts about the game's characters which don't have time to be properly introduced or developed in the game itself. There are therefore three main selling points to this novel in that regard: Edward's past before he became a pirate, his immediate life after he gives up piracy, and of course the fact that we are treated to every major event from the game from Edward's point of view, allowing us to know what he was or wasn't thinking in those situations. On the last point, this serves to flesh him out further as a character. When playing as him, it's easy to imagine or assume that he has no doubts while running across ships being pelted by canonfire or taking on numerous opponents at once. He can quite simply seem invincible (As can Altair, Ezio, and Connor, the previous protagonists in the series) However that's not the case and this book makes that very clear, inserting a sense of vulnerability and reality into the character, who at the end of the day is just a normal man, if a skilled one at that.

In terms of new content, the first 130 pages or so cover Edward's life before the game and leading directly into it's start where he ends up on that island with Duncan Walpole, and around the last 30 pages are concluding it with him leaving the Caribbean and returning to Bristol. Overall those last 30 pages were the weakest, seeming somewhat rushed in the grand scheme. But its nice to have them, as they set up the events of Haytham's childhood in Assassin's Creed Forsaken. Overall this is a solid story, providing some more detail to a good game and its characters. If you enjoyed the game and the previous novel you'll definitely enjoy this. The writer has an excellent grasp of each character, making it possible for readers to hear and imagine their voices while reading, with no action seeming out of place.

I absolutely love this book
By Alexander Tucker
I absolutely love this book! I have never really been into reading, however this book keeps my attention and I find myself pacing through the pages. It is also amazing to see how well this book portrays the game. As I have played the game, I find it easy to visualise what is going on. It also tells you about Edward's life before he became a pirate. I would strongly recommend this book to people who enjoy the Assassin Creed games and who are looking to get into reading.

Great how-to book to govern your data assets
By Rolfe Lindberg
I was recently put in charge of data quality at our rapidly growing 200-person online business. As a result I've done a lot of online research on the subject and purchased several books. IMO, Ladley's book is the best reference on the market. You won't find a lot of fluff in the book. But, you will find a lot of step-by-step advice on how to get started, how the program should be organized, how to define the scope of the project, key roles to make it happen, etc.

The book is great for both large and small companies.

If you are an executive and want the overview of how it should work and should be staffed, read the first 4 chapters (out of 14). If you are the guy or gal that needs to make it happen, read the entire book.

While the text content was excellent, well-organized and thorough
By T. Talbot
While the text content was excellent, well-organized and thorough, the latter half of the book had inconsistencies between the main text and supporting materials located in the back of the book. I didn't give it 5 stars because some sections of the Phase Activity Outputs table data found in Index 1 do not easily match back to Chapter Activity Summary Table Outputs for corresponding Phase Activities. Took more manual reconciliation and reordering to figure out what was what than I think should be encountered in a published text of this caliber. Also, the book illuminates the deficiencies in DMBOK related to organizational change management, but would have really liked a more detailed look into the change management framework John employs within DG.

Insightful book
By Paul Grobler
This is a great book to help with understanding how EIM relates to the concepts of data governance, and in turn how it relates to concepts like Master Data Management and Business Intelligence projects.

The only criticism I have is that the charts and tables in the Kindle version scales very poorly, making styding them a bit of a chore. This is important since a lot of the practical advice (which is really good), is not easily consumed.

However, I would still recommend this book to gain better understanding of data governance and related concepts, and find out more about how to establish data governance culture within an organisation.
