Need a Quick Review of Data Structures and Algorithms? Make This Your "Little Black -- or rather -- Yellow Book."

I was surprised when this book arrived; it was much thinner than expected but it packs a lot of punch. The author succinctly describes the data structures, algorithms, and the code; the weaknesses and the strengths of each solution. Think of this text as a Strunk and White for the programming set. I was looking for something to help learn C++11 and one way I learn a new language is to solve little programming puzzles and this book made an excellent guide. The text starts with elementary data structures and it quickly builds up from there. It may be a primer for technical interviews but I think it is also valuable as a desk reference for quickly reviewing and implementing data structures into your coding solutions. Let me know when Volume II is ready.

A great way to learn fundamentals needed for difficult problems

Programming Problems: Fundamentals in C++11 is an effective in bridge in the gap between computer science theory and the practical problems encountered day-to-day in the software engineering industry. It provides an important refresher for professionals in the field and a challenging set of practical problems perfect for new graduates hoping to gain insight into potential questions that may be asked during technical interviews. Every problem is fully worked through and implemented in code using the new C++11 standard so the reader can compare the output of his solutions with that of the book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to build their understanding of the fundamental data structures and classic algorithms of computer science.

Excellent book for interviews with top notch companies

I have nearly three years of experience in the industry working for one of the top software companies, after completing my PhD in computer science. In my opinion, this book is easily the best around in helping prepare both fresh graduates and currently working professionals for interviews for software postitions. One of the best features of this text is examples where actual interview problems are discussed, the quaility of these questions is very close to what is asked in the industry today. Another great part of this book is that all the examples in the book are in C++, which have been compiled and run for correctness.

I strongly recommend this book as "THE" text for anyone appearing for interviews for software positions.

About the Author
Mabel Powers was a white woman who went from wigwam to wigwam listening to and recording the stories of the Iroquois. She was even made an honorary member of the Iroquois and given the Indian name, Yeh sen noh wehs, which means "one who carries and tells the stories." First published in 1917, these entertaining short stories are authentic Native American folk tales.

Iroquois Stories

I feel that I am really fortunate to find this book. It is almost 100 years old. It is only missing one page. There are old stories that have been lost in my area. It was originally a second grade reader. I will keep it until my son is about that age. I want to pass along the stories of his grandfathers. I feel that it was a great buy.

Stories the Iroqois Tell Their Children

Fables or stories of the Iroquois, adapted from their oral tradition of story telling, explain aspects of nature and humanity while teaching life lessons. This collection of short stories transcends time and deliverers positive messages in child friendly vocabulary. While the message may not always be apparent to children, adults will surely understand and enjoy at the wisdom held in the stories.
My copy sits right next to Aesop's Fables.

Iroquois Folk and Fairy Tales

If you are okay with Native American Indians being called "red children" and Europeans being called "white children" then this book is awesome. If you object to such non-PC naming of cultural groups, you can skip right to the section labeled "Iroquois Wonder Tales" and it'll still be a nearly awesome book.

Actually, I might recommend skipping the introduction sections, because they were not as well-written as the actual stories themselves and left me with low expectations of what else the book contained--expectations which were then happily surpasses with flying colors.

The stories themselves are pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a book of Native American tales--a bit of wonder, a lot of respect for nature, some bashing of the Europeans and of course, a few stories of elf-like trickster fairies that help or hinder children while teaching them lessons.

While the stories and language of this book is child-friendly, it definitely has appeal to all ages, and you should check it out.

The table of contents is an active chart. There are 39 stories, including 6 introductory ones, 29 wonder tales and 4 fairy stories.
