THANKFULLY IT'S SMALL

Having read lots of Harlan Ellison's collections, I can honestly say that this one is not one of his best. You won't find any Hugo-award winners in here, folks. Of course, I've read LOTS of Harlan stories that DIDN'T win awards and were absolutely WONDERFUL. There is one such story in this collection that comes to mind--Erotophobia. Remember the opening scene of Austin Powers? Where he's being chased by all these women. That's the basic idea for that story. Absolutely hilarious. As for the rest of the stories in this book, I didn't find any that were Harlan at his worst. Even the story Catman, the longest and least enjoyable of the bunch had a little something to it. I wouldn't recommend that first time Harlan-readers start here, though. But for those of us that have read our Harlan, this is definitely worth getting.

Nice collection by the SF short story master

Ellison's stories punch where it hurts. Approaching Oblivion (1974) is filled with transfixing tales about violent future racism ("Knox"), humanity's last moments ("Kiss of Fire"), the desperate desire to change one's own past ("One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty"), a last rebel against the militarizing system ("Silent in Gehanna"), and familial rivalry within a vast arcology ("Catman"), etc...

They are terrifying and vicious, immersive and gut-wrenching, and span from baroque far future speculations to near future warnings. Above all, they are well-written and intelligent. Many are infused with (pseudo) autobiographical content and lament the societal ills that Ellison sees as most pervasive and dangerous and most of the time he believes it's futile to do anything about it.

Warning: I suspect some readers will find the nihilistic and caustic tone of the volume tedious. Ellison proclaims at the end of his introduction: "This is what tomorrow looks like, dummy" (16). And he can't resist taking a swipe at the reader (and the American public in general), "if you hear me sobbing once in a while, it's only because you've killed me, too, you f[*****]" (16).

But the sobs are beautiful...

...and I need more of his collections.

Brief Plot Summary/Analysis

"Knox" (1974) 5/5 (Very Good): The collection starts off with a mordant and literary story of a dystopic future plagued by racism -- a future (perhaps) where the Patriotism Party holds great allure. The work is particularly hard-hitting due to the fact that similar white supremacist groups exist today. Knox rises through the ranks of the Patriotism Party by engaging in hate crimes, memorizing long lists of racial epithets, and practicing at the shooting range. Ellison masterfully pairs Knox's growing hatred of minorities (and the events after his first kill) with the slow disintegration of his family (especially his love for his wife). Although `Knox' is a product of Ellison's day, these issues have in no way disappeared. A terrifying read...

"Cold Friend" (1973) 4.25/5 (Good): A vaguely SF story (speculative might be the better term) of man who dies of cancer yet spontaneously resurrects (or so he thinks). But when he awakes in the hospital he discovers the world has changed.... The people are gone, his town is the world, the food in the stores are always stocked and spoil, and strange effect that violate gravity occur at the edge of his world. Soon he is beset by barbarians that rush down the deserted streets which he fights off with paperbacks -- and he sees a girl in semi-translucent white dress who seems to have unusual power over the nature of his world.

"Kiss of Fire" (1973) 4.25/5 (Good): A fantastic vision of a decadent and baroque far future.... In a vast space vessel that gathers the memories of the inhabitants of recently destroyed planets, Redditch, who programs their deaths -- wanders the halls in a veritable malaise. This is a future where everyone has become bored with their near endless existence -- the only thing that titillates and evokes emotion is death. Ellison pulls an intriguing trick that might put off some readers -- the language, despite its incredibly flowery nature ("He drank ice crystals laced with midnight and watched their world burn"), feels oddly empty... Perhaps this references the vast array of stimuli the characters experience but remain unstimulated by. Whether this was his intention or not -- the language might simply be overkill -- the effect combined with the plot is rather disturbing.

"Paulie Charmed the Sleeping Woman" (1962) 3/5 (Average) does not contain speculative elements... Paulie played jazz and Ginny loved to listen night after night. And when Ginny dies Paulie gets depressed and wants to play at her grave. A simple tale told with some jazz-like verve...

"I'm Looking for Kadak" (1974) 4/5 (Good): I suspect that if I were Jewish (as Ellison is) I would understand more of this highly original story. Ten Jewish aliens remain on the planet Zsouchmuhn.... and one of them dies. Unfortunately, ten are needed to perform a sacred death ceremony. These aliens have many limbs and their souls speak long after they are dead... The dead alien's soul tells the remaining Jews that they need to track down Kadak in order to complete the ceremony. One of the aliens sets out to find Kadak and discovers all the bizarre cults and religions Kadak once adhered to.

I would suggest that Ellison is commenting on the power of religious tradition -- despite the far future setting and alien adherents, many of the Jewish traditions have remained intact. The story is filled with fun observations on tradition and religion, unusual rituals, and strange societies but is not for the fainthearted -- many of the key Jewish concepts are conveyed via Yiddish phrases and Ellison's accompanying index is necessary to understand what is happening.

"Silent in Gehenna" (1971) 4.5/5 (Very Good): Joe Bob Hickney is the last voice against the militarization of society: "You call this academic freedom, you bunch of earthworms! You call electrified fences and armed guards in your classrooms the path to learning?" (76). He's the last rebel. Everyone else has succumbed. Joe demonstrates on a University campus but no one listens. Soon he is kidnapped and awakes far from the University -- those who tends his wounds are other outcasts but utterly apathetic to the problems of the world. The apathy of everyone around him is devastating...

"Erotophobia" (1971) 3/5 (Average): An incredibly comic story in which Ellison ridicules one of the most prevalent cliches of the SF and F genre -- the irresistible male hero whom all the young women run after... If Nate Kleisher ventures outside of his home he will literally be "loved to death." Everyone, male or female, finds him attractive and go to great extremes to get at him. Afraid for his life Nate seeks out a renowned German shrink.... A fun satirical tale with a bizarre conclusion.

"One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty" (1970) 4/5 (Good): A profoundly moving story of Gus Rosenthal -- a foil for Ellison -- who travels back in time and befriends his younger self. His younger self was ridiculed for being a Jew and ran away from home at a young age. Filled with autobiographical tidbits from Ellison's own life, the work is filled with interwoven strands of nostalgia and longing to improve one's own past.

"Ecowareness" (1974) 3/5 (Average): "Now isn't that a nice story. And [f***] you, too" (124). Ellison's snarky "story" isn't really a "story" but a swipe at his audience and the American public in general. In short we are screwing the planet and not doing anything about it.... A "fairy tale" about Earth and how many people it had to kill before people realized the damage they had wrecked.

"Catman" (1974) 4.25/5 (Good): The first half of the story is brilliant. The second half loses some of the power and momentum, and the ending is all too abrupt. The son is a thief who transports himself across the vast arcology of London stealing drugs. The father is a policeman, called the Catman, who hunts his son across the vast construct (with its waterfalls, oceans, gardens, habitation levels) with his mechanical animals -- but only within his shift hours. And then there's a society of half-men who live below ground who have sex with a large machine which seems to slowly consume their bodies and intelligence... And an unusual mother character who desperately wants her husband to catch the son so he gets his promotion....

"Catman" is a baffling yet transfixing experience. The images of a son being chased by his father -- and an assortment of mechanical animals - across a vast future city is one of most memorable sequences of the collection. I'd love to hear your interpretations!

"Hindsight: 480 Seconds" (1973) 3.75/5 (Good): The only of Ellison's works I'd previously read -- in the collection Future City (1973) ed. Elwood... I enjoyed it more this time so I've increased the rating but kept the gist of the original review: The world's cities have lifted into space, � la Blish's Cities in Flight, due to an approaching planetoid which will crash into Earth. One man is selected, a poet, to stay on the planet (and die) so that he can send his impressions of the destruction of earth (to the flying cities) for all future generations of the displaced. The story is deeply evocative: How would we process the loss of our home world? And of course, our poet is unable to do justice to the event (is it even possible?) and has more personal concerns."

Uneven, but Worth Reading

This book collects eleven stories that were mostly written in the late 60's and early 70's. It was published in 1974, when Ellison's view of the world and of America was at a low ebb, as he makes clear in one of his patented in-your-face introductions. (Not many authors have the chutzpah to call their readers cowards and sell-outs and fools and...other words that start with f...) Like a lot of collections, it's an uneven affair. A couple of stories are so slight as to make you wonder why they were included at all, and several more are written at such a pitch of paranoid political and cultural rage (an Ellison trademark) as to be a bit embarassing now, forty years down the road. (Embarassing for the reader, that is - I'm sure Ellison would stand by them completely, and would hand a profanity-punctuated beating to anyone who suggested otherwise). But even weaker Ellison stories are still definitely live wires, and a few tales here are very fine, especially the autoboigraphical and deeply-felt One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty, in which a middle aged writer travels back in time to befriend a lonely, outcast little boy - himself, at the age of seven. With Harlan Ellison, you take the good with the bad; you'll find them, not just in the same book, but often in the same paragraph. You certainly can't snooze through his stories - alternately appaling and brilliant, they're never a waste of time.

Interesting little collection from a lesser known pulp author

Once again, we have another great collection of pulp fiction from Altus Press (not "CreateSpace", that's just Amazon's PoD effort).

This volume collections several 'snake' inspired works by early pulp author Richard Sale, including his short-lived pulp hero: the Cobra! We get a great little intro by Will Murray, and learn that Richard Sale was like most pulp authors (and what most wanted to be): he started off in the pulps, and used that to move up to the 'slicks', then became a screenwriter and director in movies and tv, thus that his time as a pulp author is just a footnote in his long career.

Having an early interest in snakes and herpetology, he wrote several 'snake' inspired works, not all of which met with approve by pulp audiences (not sure why).

The first 3 stories are of his short-lived pulp here: the Cobra, which appeared in ''Ten Detective Aces'' as a replacement for Lester Dent's Blond Adder (a gadget-hero which predated Doc and recently reprinted by Altus Press!). The Cobra was really Deen Bradley, an American working for British Intelligence in India. He used a blow-gun with small darts using snake venom. Its unclear why the character didn't last longer, maybe the readers complained and he was dropped. Overall, the stories are interesting, and you can see a lot of potential, but you can see issues as well. The first story is set in India, the next in London, and the third in New York. As you go along, later stories refer to previous ones, and in the 3rd one there is reference to another event that wasn't reported. You can see some issues with how Sale handled the character.

Rounding out the volume are 3 snake-themed stories, two from the back of Secret Agent X, and the 3rd from Thrilling Detective. All are enjoyable, being more standard detective fiction.

Then there are 2 works from the Writer Digest. The first is a nice article on the need for research, using as examples many snake-infested fiction works. And the other a sort of story of a pulp publisher putting out a new hero pulp called "Cobra: King of Detectives". One wonders if and to how much the characters in that work are based on real pulpsters.

Overall, this is yet another nice little collection from Altus!!

Solid info

Forex charts make more sense to me after reading this book. Gann strategy from the book is definitive and not dynamic so you will always do only one thing and one thing only and will not change the rules which makes things easier to follow. Strategy is about trading on all time frames with the same rules with modification of gann angles which can hopefully add to more trades in shorter amount of time. The book itself is providing the rules of trading and explanation of the rules and the system.

Very disappointing

I'm known as the Simon Cowell of book reviews. Sure I'm tough, but everyone knows if I give 5 stars it's not going to be fluff or because I know the author. First, look at the overly glowing reviews - they came out fast after publication of the book and the way they are written smacks of fake reviews written by friends and family. How you can tell that is you will see things in the glowing reviews like, "Amazing results" and "I wasted years in trading with wrong methods". Really - after only having the book for a few days - so I guess all of that is based on 1 trade!

Also, there is a myth out there that I am always looking to change systems or strategies, or I just use something like an ma crossover - nothing could be further from the truth. The only people that say that are just jealous of my knowledge, or perhaps use an ma crossover system themselves. For one thing, you should never trade based on a "system". The reason is, "systems" don't work. They don't work because whatever your criteria is to enter, it may not work the next time because the "background" on the next trade might be different. So instead of a "system" you should have an "approach". An approach partially involves reading the environment and then applying analysis that fits the situation. To be successful you need many different types of trading arrows in your quiver. That is why I am always reading books on trading because every once and awhile I find another arrow worthy of my incredible arsenal. The market is always changing, and you need to be smart enough and versatile enough to be ready for it. I am talking about having the experience to be able to read a chart, and then know how to approach that specific chart and situation, which means you have to analyze strength and weakness and momentum etc and be able to apply an analysis and approach to effectively trade it. And sometimes there is a unique arrow that fits the situation, so you have to start filling your quiver with great arrows like me.

Anyway, at first I thought this was going to be a book that had potential to be worthy as one of my arrows(but I now know it couldn't have anyway - more on that later), but it came up short. For one thing, the author wasn't clear on the main angle. He said you draw it based on(for example if using a daily chart) 200 pips per day on the EURUSD. Ok, let's say it's based on 200 pips per day, so then how do you draw it? He doesn't explain or show how to draw the main angle, which is the most important part! If you don't know how to draw that the whole book is worthless. Then, where does 200 pips come from in the first place? Why 200? Who knows. He says if it's at $2 then use 200 pips - why? That doesn't make sense to base it on price. Just because price is at $2 doesn't mean it will move more or less than if it is at $1. And this is where the author shows he is lacking in a very basic understanding of how price and charts work. A 50 pip candle on the EURUSD chart when price is at $1 is exactly, and I mean exactly, the same candle if it is on a EURUSD chart when the price is at $2. It's the same amount of pips and is exactly the same length. So take that knowledge one step further. You could have the exact same pattern of candles on a $1 chart and a $2 chart. That's right. In fact, you could have the exact same candles on both charts such that if you hid the price on the right side of the charts you couldn't tell if it was a $1 chart or a $2 chart. Whatever indicator you used, including Gann fan lines, should look identical on both charts. Therefore, if you drew a Gann fan on both charts, they should look exactly the same because the candle pattern is exactly the same - which in turn means it doesn't matter if price is $1 or $2. Therefore, to do that, you would have to enter the exact same parameters on the Gann fan to get the same fan. But the author says you enter different parameters based on whether price is at $1 or $2, but I have just proved that is totally wrong, but the author doesn't understand that because he is lacking a basic understanding about how candles and price and pips work. If anything, it should be based on ATR or something similar. Also, he says he is a successful trader, yet he doesn't even know how to tell how many pips are in price. For example, he said .0020 is 200 pips on the EURUSD. Wrong - that is only 20 pips. And I don't care if price is 5 decimals and it shows .00200, it's still 20 pips - another thing the author doesn't understand. If he can't get that right, then it makes me think he doesn't even trade or has ever traded. Then after all that, he shows a chart and the main line is 45 degrees. Ok, so do we just use 45 degrees as the main angle? And then on the chart examples, he doesn't really show you much on how to even trade it. He touches on it a little, but it's not very comprehensive. I think at best this book is a very vague intro to a possible technique. The author needs to edit this book and include more examples and details of how to use this technique to enter trades step by step since in it's present state it's pretty much worthless. Too bad because it had potential(except for the fact I now know Gann himself was a fake, so most likely his Gann fan is just hocus pocus anyway). Also, this book is basically just about drawing a Gann fan, but you can see how to draw a Gann fan on the Internet for free, so don't waste your money here. I had actually looked into trading Gann techniques in the past, but never really saw any usefulness to it, but I kept an open mind. But there is a broader problem here anyway - and I didn't know this until after I got this book because I had to research Gann fans after I read this book because it was so vague on how to trade it, and I ended up researching Gann himself(again, AFTER I got this book). What most people don't know is Gann himself couldn't even successfully trade. Verified by his own son, Gann was actually just another salesman and seller of systems like most of the so called gurus we have today. He couldn't trade himself out of a paper bag. Gann's own systems are nothing but a farce. Alexander Elder interviewed Gann's own son, and Gann's son said Gann couldn't trade and made his money from selling courses. And that people, is documented fact.

Nice book and well written, however I believe that the author needs to define how to set up the process he is referring to on MT5 for those who have never set up this feature before. Also, the author needs to determine why highs and lows are not always the starting point for his analysis. Further work would determine that other points are better at finding better trends.

Ben Waggoner has been compressing video for nearly 20 years. He cofounded the pioneering digital media services company Journeyman Digital, launched Terran Interactive's consulting services division, and was principal of Interframe Media. Ben joined Microsoft in 2005, and is now Principal Video Strategist for Microsoft's Silverlight platform.

Must have for all production libraries

This book covers it all in the technical world of content delivery. I wish I had this book much earlier. Even though it is not current in the area of HD, it covers enough ground to make the numerous delivery fomats clear. This book should be required reading for all students of broadcasting.

Balance of breadth and depth

This book is not meant for beginners. The reviewer who gave the book one star is simply clueless, who obviously chose to ignore the preface, which clearly says that "this book is for compressionists ..." (i.e., not for total beginners, who should see Digital Video for Dummies).

The author of this book manages to do exactly what he promises, which is to detail the use of a vast number of tools, to generate digital video in countless formats, on innumerable types of media. The possible permutations when all tools, formats, and media are taken together is simply mind-numbing, which is why such a book is necessary in the first place. Any dedicated amateur (or even professional) compressionist needs to know whether there is a better way to do what he or she stumbled across by accident on the vast Internet. This book very clearly describes many of the best combination of tools and strategies to produce the best content possible. The writing style is very fluid and friendly, although I would stop short of calling the book an easy read, because the amount of information is too overwhelming for a straight read; instead, I would use it almost like a reference and jump to a particular chapter to refresh my memory and skills just before undertaking a new compression task.

With so much information to write about, I am sure the book was an organizational nightmare for the author, and although he did an overall great job in organizing it, there are still numerous spots where he could have done a better job of introducing a topic before using it to explain other topics. Examples that come to mind: referring to DirectShow without describing it, or creating examples based on video editing tools like Cleaner without first introducing the tool (there are others).

All in all, this is a book that I will continue to use often.

MUST HAVE for anyone working in DV Production

Full Disclosure: I am not a compressionist nor have I ever met Ben. Although, he has answered more than one of my questions in the COW Cleaner Forum.
This book is for compressionists, people who want to be compressionists, and people who on occasion need to pretend they're compressionists (pg. 3). With this clear objective stated up front, Ben opens up and let's his brain pour out over each and every page, all 447 of them.
Right from the beginning I was more than a little intimidated and excited at the same time, just from reviewing the Table of Contents. Ben organizes his knowledge into 25 chapters, a glossary, index and a CD-ROM. I will not list all 25 chapters but trust me, if you can think of it Ben covers it.
The first section (Chapters 1-11) is about general principles of vision, compression, and how compressed video operates (pg. 3). No matter what compressionist category you think you fall into, you will learn something in these first chapters, even if it turns how to be how much you forgot since grade school.
The next section (Chapters 12-24) covers specific video tools and technologies (pg. 3). Ben covers them all and yes, I read them all even the ones that I do not use. Most of the information here I was already formula because when I first started working with Cleaner I studied (yes, studied) the manual. However, now that I have my feet wet the information covered here makes more sense.
The last Chapter (Chapter 25) consists of three extensive tutorials that highlight many of the concepts, formats, and tools discussed throughout the book (pg. 3). They cover; Streaming, Progressive Downloading, and Animation for Video Games. So, if your work covers any of these your in luck, if not (such as me) than you may need to read certain Chapters again to pick up what you missed the first time. The CD only contains short snippets of each projects source files. If you'd like the full-length content you will have to order a DVD-ROM from Ben's website. I have to cry foul here, sure you don't need the full-length content to `get the point' but no where on the outside of the book does it tell you that you will only get snippets. I mention this for those of you that get angry over `thin slim' CD's.
Compression for Great Digital Video is an easy and delightful read. It's not very often that you come across a book that covers this much technical information and yet still manages to be clearly understood. Ben fully explains everything that he mentions and often he even provides additional references should you require more information. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone who find themselves compressing digital video.

About the Author

Mr Neil Borley trained at Guy's Hospital Medical School, Cambridge, Canterbury and Oxford. He is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon with an interest in the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students of basic sciences and surgery. He is also an examiner in surgery.
Mr Christopher Callaghan qualified in medicine from the University of Otago, New Zealand, and did his basic surgical training in Cambridge, UK. After completing his PhD in transplantation immunology at the University of Cambridge he was appointed as a Specialist Registrar in General Surgery in East Anglia and as a Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, University of Cambridge. He has interests in transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery.
