Amazon.com Review
Just like It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Valentine, this illustrated read-along seeks to re-create the popular Peanuts TV show of the same name. This edition also includes a four-song sampler CD from jazz-great Vince Guaraldi's brilliant soundtrack.

With illustrator Paige Braddock aping Charles Schulz's style, A Charlie Brown Christmas retells the Emmy Award-winning program blow-by-blow (with a few omissions), from the ice-skating opening scene to preparations for the school pageant to Charlie Brown's ill-fated Christmas tree rescue. Braddock almost perfectly mimics the show's cast and backdrops, but just as no one could be fooled by even expert impersonation of a loved one, Peanuts fans might find the niggling differences distracting (whether it's Schroeder's too-wavy hair or Pig Pen's just-too-small head).

A "novelization" like this probably can't ever hope to completely recapture the charm of the original, even if it had used Schulz's original art. Although the dialogue has been faithfully reproduced, much of the story's subtle appeal and cultural subtext gets lost in the book's simplified exposition--which is too bad, given that these are precisely the qualities which have made the show (and Schulz's timeless strip) so durable and well-loved in the first place. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—On December 9, 1965, the animated special A Charlie Brown Christmas was originally aired on CBS, and a tradition was born. The book version of the story has been published many times over the last 50 years, with different authors taking on the challenge of adapting it to the page. This 50th anniversary edition presents a very streamlined tale, told in the present tense. Readers never find out, for example, that the play Charlie Brown is supposed to direct is a Nativity play. Still, the main points are all there—Snoopy's well-decorated dog house, little Sally's avaricious letter to Santa, Linus's brief but powerful reminder of the original Christmas story, and Charlie Brown's sad little tree, which becomes something special when the gang works together to decorate it. This paperback edition with glitter on the cover may not last for 50 years, but it hits the important notes and might do better with younger readers/listeners. VERDICT Buy a few extra copies of this perennial favorite.—Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library

Should have just reissued the original
By Stephen J. Van Hook
I love "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and so was completely disappointed by this paperback book edition of the story.
The "By Charles M. Schulz" on the cover and in the listing hides the fact that the text is not by Schulz, but is "adapted" by other people. The text adaptation is painfully bad -- I could barely force myself to read it to my child the other night. The text is way too wordy, which contradicts the whole style of Schulz's comic strip, and changes key dialog of characters.
The illustrations are okay, but why not just use the original drawings by Schulz himself?
A book version of A Charlie Brown Christmas was printed in the 1960's; the publishers would have been smarter to reissue the original book rather than create this new version.
If you want to have a book version of A Charlie Brown Christmas, I highly recommend that you spend a bit more money and buy the hardcover book, "A Charlie Brown Christmas: the Making of a Tradition". You won't regret it.

Peanuts will live forever
By Don Barrie
I got this book for Christmas, and it does not disappoint. It contains all the strips from the final year (Jan. 1, 1999 to Feb. 13, 2000), and it's great to have it all in one book. And my copy contains the actual final strip published the weekend Charles Schulz died. He may have left us, but books like this one prove that we can revisit Charlie Brown, Snoopy and their pals any time we want. Thank you, Mr. Schulz.

Happiness is another Peanuts book. Even if it's the Last One
By Barry Pearl
It was with great sadness that I read the final Peanuts strips. The strips were fantastic and funny as always. But I did know that this was the end.
Charlie Brown would never get another chance to kick the football or win a baseball game. His love would go unrequited, as it had for 50 years. Charlie Brown reminds us, "The inside of a mailbox should always be kept clean in case you get a love letter." But he received no valentines this year either. Marcia and Peppermint Patty never got a chance to tell them how they felt. I don't know if Snoopy ever got to Bill Maudlin's house on Veteran's Day either. But if Charles Schultz were still here, would they eventually be successful? As Charlie Brown once said, "Never stay awake at night asking yourself questions you can't answer."
Peanuts seemed at first glance to be a simple strip. But it is complex and full of meaning. I read my first Peanuts strip in 1958 and they have only gotten better. The different characters seemed to be different parts of Charles Schultz. They are funny and they are thoughtful. This book is a perfect example of that.
(Missing from the first edition was the good-bye from Mr. Schultz. I wrote a letter to Random House about this. They sent be, at no charge, a copy of the next edition.)
So within the sadness there is laughter. The book is perfect Peanuts. And while his books will last forever, it is time to say goodbye. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus.......Charles Schultz, how could we ever forget you?

In this carefully crafted commentary Peter O'Brien distinctively harvests the results of recent scholarship on the letter to the Hebrews, especially in relation to the genre of the document and the flow of its discourse. Review
D. A. Carson
— (from editor's preface)
"It would be difficult to find a more helpful guide than Peter O'Brien or a guide better endowed with his combination of competence and genial wisdom."

David Peterson
— Moore Theological College
"Peter O'Brien has produced an engaging new commentary on Hebrews that will be of particular benefit to preachers, teachers, and students. Using insights from discourse analysis, he explains how shifts in the argument take place and clarifies the way exposition and exhortation function together to achieve the author's aim. Although there are detailed discussions of technical matters at critical points, these do not disturb the flow of the commentary."

Paul Ellingworth
— University of Aberdeen
"O'Brien's commentary on the letter to the Hebrews is a balanced and comprehensive assessment of current work on the epistle, together with many fresh insights. The text of the commentary is clear, both in detail and in its general structure. . . I cannot commend this work too highly."

George Guthrie
— Union University
"For careful scholarship and clear thinking there are very few commentary writers I respect more than Peter O'Brien, and his commentary on Hebrews does not disappoint. Masterfully interfacing with recent scholarship, O'Brien time and again plunges into the discussion of difficult passages with spot-on exegesis, lucidly explaining both the intent and the implications of the author's words. Due to a noticeable upturn in Hebrews research over the past two decades, the church has been blessed with many fine commentaries on this most enigmatic of New Testament books. Yet pastors are sure to embrace this particular commentary as theologically rich, consistently edifying, and singularly useful. I gladly recommend it."

About the Author
Peter O'Brien is senior research fellow in New Testament, Moore Theological College, Sydney, Australia.

Readable and Rigorous (A Pillar in this series!)
By Ched Spellman
The book of Hebrews is both a masterpiece and an enigma.

Serious readers of the letter have always recognized the powerful effect of its carefully crafted discourse. They have also grappled with the implications of its theologically complex message. With his contribution to the Pillar New Testament Commentary series on The Letter to the Hebrews, Peter O'Brien takes his place in this long line of interpreters. Research fellow at Moore Theological College in Sydney, Australia, O'Brien is a well-established figure in the world of New Testament studies.

As with most commentaries, O'Brien begins with a brief overview of the introductory issues (1-43). O'Brien holds that the author of Hebrews was a prominent leader among the churches and a competent exegete exceedingly familiar with the Old Testament Scriptures. The letter was most likely written in the mid first century to Jewish Christians located in Rome and in danger of returning to some form of Judaism. As a "word of exhortation," Hebrews takes the form of a written sermon meant to be "read aloud again and again" (22). The many sermonic qualities of the text such as the use of the first person, the language of speaking and hearing, and the intimacy of the discourse confirm this observation.

Accordingly, the structure of the book reflects this "complex interplay between exposition and exhortation" that runs throughout, with "major turning points" at 4:14-16 and 10:19-25 and central theological exposition in chapters 5:1-10:18 (34). Theologically, Hebrews stands within the mainstream of early Christian tradition but also contributes its own distinctive developments. These elements undergird the author's purpose in writing which was to "hammer home repeatedly the importance of faithful endurance" to his readers so that they might "reach the eternal rest in the heavenly city" (35).

O'Brien's introductory survey is helpful and represents a snapshot of significant interpretive decisions he makes in his interpretation of the letter. One noticeable lacuna here is the omission of any type of theological survey, which turns out to be an intentional decision. O'Brien states that he will address the letter's "major theological themes" in a forthcoming volume on the theology of Hebrews (xiv). Though understandable, his decision is nonetheless disappointing for a reader of this commentary. Though his comments on the text certainly account for theological elements, at least a brief survey would have provided a useful orientation to a document brimming with overt theological discourse.

O'Brien's comments on the text itself are both substantive and concise. This characteristic keeps the flow of the commentary moving at a steady pace. O'Brien makes good use of the footnotes in order to interact with contrary arguments on various interpretive decisions. On most of the issues he addresses, O'Brien utilizes the recent and most relevant scholarship available (e.g., journal articles, scholarly monographs, and unpublished dissertations). He also consistently draws on a wide-range of lexical and text-critical data to support his exegetical decisions. This robust interaction complements his dependably incisive textual commentary.

One missed opportunity in this regard involves the use of "notes" at the end of exposition sections. After his comments on 1:1-2, O'Brien interacts with competing interpretations of the notion of "Christ as divine wisdom" under the heading of "Note 1". However, this valuable tool is quite underused, occurring only once. This format could have been used in the text to outline the interpretive spectrum on a few pivotal issues (e.g., the warning passages).

The value of a new commentary is not necessarily found in its synthesis of all previous interpretive work done on a book. These commentaries are readily available to most scholars and informed students. Rather, the contribution is often in how an author brings new developments in disciplines of New Testament scholarship to bear on the text under scrutiny.

For example, O'Brien utilizes discourse analysis, which examines meaning above the sentence level. This tool aids in determining the relationship that each paragraph has to its surrounding material and also in discerning the structure of the book as a whole. O'Brien follows George H. Guthrie's broad structure that traces the recurring shifts between the exposition and exhortation sections. At the appropriate places in the commentary, O'Brien works out the details of his structural decisions. This emphasis is especially appropriate for a letter that doubles as a sermon.

O'Brien also makes use of verbal aspect theory, which holds that verb tenses convey the viewpoint of the speaker rather than merely the time of the action. This discussion is typically theoretical, so O'Brien's application of its insights is helpful and sheds interpretive light on a number of texts. To give one example, the statement in Heb 1:4 that Jesus "inherited" a name greater than the angels is in the perfect tense form. O'Brien notes that the aspect of the perfect tense "powerfully draws attention to Jesus' prominence and the superiority of his present position, rather than indicating when he received the name" (61). Thus, in relevant cases, O'Brien highlights the function of a verb's aspect rather than only its temporal implications (see also 18, 99, 150, 421).

O'Brien is also keen on new research concerning the New Testament's use of the Old Testament. For instance, he integrates the recent strand of inquiry that detects a sustained allusion to the wilderness generation of Israel in key passages (e.g., 217-18). He also consistently examines the function of the Old Testament material. In this regard, he notes that the seven Old Testament quotations in 1:5-11 provide the exegetical support for the lofty Christological statements in the prologue (1:1-4). This type of analysis is also crucial in understanding a book that is rife with quotations, allusions, and echoes of Israel's Scriptures.

In sum, O'Brien has provided the church with a readable, rigorous analysis of an important New Testament document from a confessional standpoint. His volume certainly functions as a pillar in this commentary series and will represent a reliable account of the meaning and message of the book of Hebrews for years to come.

Loved the commentary
By Ashley L Hodge
I always hesitate to start digging into a commentary of over 500 pages. Many are written in a way that is difficult to keep the reader interested. Not the case with this commentary. I think O'Brien did a great job of putting the cookies on the low shelf. I learned a lot about Hebrews through O'Brien's scholarship and the knowledge motivated me towards life application and transformation. I was studying the book with a group of friends. We used NT Wright's "Hebrews for Everyone" as our main study guide. It was good but light. If you want to go deeper, I highly recommend this book.

Another Excellent Addition to the PNTC
By Jacob Sweeney
Hebrews is one of my favorite books of the New Testament. The author was a master of Greek, the Old Testament and rhetoric. The way he moves through comparing Moses and Melchizedek with Christ is incredible. He gives us an insight into how we ought to understand and interpret the Old Testament. Nevertheless, there are things in this letter (or sermon) that can be difficult to understand. Many people throughout history have been quick to make hasty conclusions about portions of Hebrews, myself included. It would be beneficial for all of us to think carefully about this very important NT book.

Peter O'Brien's commentary on Hebrews helps us do that. He writes with a scholars sharp thinking and a pastor's heart. He understands that this isn't just an academic exercise, he is offering a guide to aid men in the proclamation of God's Word to his people. There is more at stake than scholastic street cred.

Most importantly, for a commentary on Hebrews sensitive to pastoral concerns, he deals generously and carefully with the infamous warning passages. As he explores the text he clearly explains the constructions and the available options. Whether everyone will be convinced of his conclusions is not the ultimate value of O'Brien's commentary. Instead, he shows how we can be gracious and careful in our Bible study. This is a model that we can all follow and benefit from.

This is a welcome addition to any pastor's library. O'Brien's careful exegesis will help any minister or bible study leader as they lead their people through this beautiful and powerful book of the NT.

NOTE: In accordance with the regulations of the Federal Trade Commission I would like to state that I received a complementary copy of the aforementioned text for the purposes of review. I was not required to furnish a positive review.

Humanism and Calvinism: Andrew Melville and the Universities of Scotland, 1560-1625 (St Andrews Studies in Reformation History), by Steven

Across early-modern Europe the confessional struggles of the Reformation touched virtually every aspect of civic life; and nowhere was this more apparent than in the universities, the seedbed of political and ecclesiastical society. Focussing on events in Scotland, this book reveals how established universities found themselves at the centre of a struggle by competing forces trying to promote their own political, religious or educational beliefs, and under competition from new institutions. It surveys the transformation of Scotland's medieval and Catholic university system into a greatly-expanded Protestant one in the decades following the Scottish Reformation of 1560. Simultaneously the study assesses the contribution of the continentally-educated religious reformer Andrew Melville to this process in the context of broader European social and cultural developments - including growing lay interest in education (as a result of renaissance humanism), and the involvement of royal and civic government as well as the new Protestant Kirk in university expansion and reform. Through systematic use of largely neglected manuscript sources, the book offers fresh perspectives on both Andrew Melville and the development of Scottish higher education post-1560. As well as providing a detailed picture of events in Scotland, it contributes to our growing understanding of the role played by higher education in shaping society across Europe.

Review
Prize: Winner, Senior Hume Brown Prize in Scottish History, 2012 'Reid reconstructs the story of the Scottish universities and the part played by Andrew Melville in their transformation with immense skill and insight.' Anglican & Episcopal History 'Reid's conclusions fill major gaps in the historiography of the Reformation and in the evolution of the intellectual world, providing more detailed information on Melville's professional life than has been attempted in over a century.' Journal of Scottish Historical Studies 'Humanism and Calvinism is a major work, offering unique and powerful insight into the issues, textures and politics of Scottish higher education during one of its most contested and formative moments.' Northern Scotland 'This work will be of great help to readers interested in university life in the early modern period, Scottish intellectual history, or how change came gradually through multiple concerns and priorities.' Sixteenth Century Studies 'The book is meticulously researched and clearly written, and will long serve as a standard history.' H-Albion 'This is a well-written specialist study which will be required reading for anyone researching Scottish education in future.' Journal of the Edinburgh Bibliographical Society
