Great book, met my expectations
By SP
I bought this book to obtain background knowledge for a research project involving the Microsoft Kinect. This book covered all the base material in C# needed to expand into other fields, such as the Kinect or web application development, or to games. While each of those topics is not covered within the book, the base programming knowledge is enough to work with when moving into these fields.

Pretty good for beginners and as a refresher -- since when are "Dummies" books for the experts?
By Scott
I don't understand why everyone is being so harsh on this book. While not as authoritative of a reference as the Nutshell book, this is a great beginners book - thus the title. It is very much in keeping with the "Dummies" traditions. While I have been writing C# code in my free time for 10 years, I still like that this book broke things down - as I don't get to practice every day. I do occasionally forget things that I learned 10 years ago and never used since. I also learned a few things I hadn't taken the time to figure out before, and optimization tips that I didn't realized before. There were entire chapters I needed to read, and of course many I skipped. The examples were pretty solid, neither too specific nor too abstract. I find that not to necessarily be the case with examples you find on the web. Yes, you can find the same information elsewhere, but it takes a long time to hunt it all down and find what works for you. I can't tell you how many hours I spent searching for a good example at times, only to find an example that was either too complex for what I needed or too basic to wrap my head around. Further, I've discovered that there are examples that work, examples that teach, and examples that are good (not just compile and run). Finding all of this on the web isn't exactly easy.
This book takes out that hunting and makes it easy for beginners or for someone struggling with a specific concept.
Another consideration is how well you know how to code in other languages. This book is a pretty close to a true beginners book, while also being comprehensive. You could almost have never written a line of code (in any language) and start here. Almost. I'd probably organize it a little better for that purpose, as well as build in some exercises and questions -- but then it would be a text book! On the other hand, if you've been coding in C++ for 25 years, then this may certainly be a little too basic. You need more of a quick and dirty "upgrade" book and the MSDN reference.
I didn't see anything on Async, threading, or the Windows Runtime. I found this to be a major hole - one which I expect they are already working to fill. WPF, ASP.NET, and ASMX are introduced well.
The authors throw a ton of sarcasm and funny comments here and there. I haven't completely decided if that's a good thing or not. First, if English isn't your first language, then you may not get it. Secondly, it does add unnecessary wordiness. But - on the flip side, it does make a dry topic a little bit more fun, and I generally enjoyed it, though it was a bit much at times.
Again, if you are a semi-C# expert, get the Nutshell book or use the web and skip this. But there are many out there who are trying to learn to code, or refreshing what they know, and need a little help to get started. (Suggestion: maybe borrow/rent this book as an intro/refresher and buy the Nutshell book as a reference.) Head First is also a pretty good option.

It was pretty helpful reverence.but not as a good learning tool for first time learners of C#. I really like Head First better as learning tool.
