Santa through History

What a refreshing read this books provides. Taking the legend of Saint Nicholas down through history, weaving in stories of other famous historical figures and events, thereby creating a marvelous story of the life of the one we know as Santa Claus. This is all done in such a realistic way that you are left with a belief that Santa is for real. The book has twenty-four chapters leading it to be an ideal bedtime book to read to children or ourselves. After reading, I bought copies of the book for my son and daughter to use with their children.

A wonderful mixture of fantasy and history

I can't even imagine how long it must have taken Jeff Guinn to research and piece together this unusual book, but the hard work was worth it. "The Autobiography of Santa Claus" is part novel, part history, and something that anyone who loves Saint Nicholas will be grateful to read.
Guinn tracks down the origins of nearly all pieces of the Santa Claus legends and pieces them together, beginning with the birth of Nicholas in 280 A.D. He traces a life that lasts over 1700 years and explains how every well-known story of Santa Claus came to be, mixing in science with magic and throwing in actual historical figures to color the piece. (You'll never believe who some of Santa's "helpers" actually turn out to be.) He takes the character through the dark ages, through the Victorian era, mixes him in with European and American history and literature and finally brings it all together in the present day.
The book doesn't have much of a climax, but that's because it is written as an "autobiography," not a novel. The stories just stop because they've all been told... for now. That's part of the miracle -- the knowledge that Santa Claus will outlast us all and continue bringing his true gift, hope, to children all over the world long after you and I are gone. Buy this, not the compilation

This is by far the best of my ukulele instruction books. The authors and DVD teacher Daniel Ho do a fine job of introducing the novice player to the ukulele, to playing chords, to strumming, to note reading. Exercises are in that sweet 80/20 spot educators like to talk about (where learners are always being pushed forward-the 20%, but also are getting reinforcement on past learning-the 80%). The idea is that 80/20 keeps students challenged, but not frustrated. (I have no idea if this came about by happy accident or intention.) This book is one of a 3-part series, each accompanied by its own DVD. There is also a compilation book that is priced below the cost of the three, but does not include the 3 DVDs. The novice player, or someone like me who has remained a little stuck at the beginner/intermediate level, would be better served spending the money on the individual book/DVDs. Buyers should keep in mind, there is no magic bullet when it comes to the ukulele. The lessons taught in Beginning Ukulele require attention and persistence (deliberate practice in response to weakness). Determined players, whether newbies or stuck in a rut, will find it very useful.

Great Book for those new to the Ukulele

This book and the accompanying DVD are a great resource for those wanting to learn to play the ukulele. This book will take you from the very basics of first starting to play to the point of being able to make some pretty good music. It introduces you to a variety of styles and techniques, as well as to basic music theory. I would recommend this book to anyone from a complete beginner to someone who has been playing for a while but wants to become more technically proficient or expand their capabilities.

Good lessons, but too difficult to follow along.

Very hard to follow the video with the book, and the chapters are numbered different. It moves along quickly, but the pause option helps. As a beginner I found this frustrating. Though, he is awesome and in time I hope to go back and figure it all out.

I could've had a V8

This was just an unrealistic story. People don't talk like this. People don't react this way. It was like Zane was trying to preach through the dialogue of characters, and it just didn't flow at all. There were no flaws with Tevin. Jemistry was bitter, but fell in love in 2 chapters??? Predictable scenarios. No big bang. I kept waiting for something to happen-- it never did. There were barely any lead ins to the sex scenes. The sex scenes were rushed, didn't flow, and weren't good.

The. Book is alright, the title doesn't match the title this is like a fairly tale love story. This book doesn't have the effect that makes you dream about it. Not mystery nor suspense, the two man characters were the average working, white picket fence type of people only in a book you can find this type of love, good sex, making money and faithful.....hahaha
Tevin and Jemistry( what type of name is that) is ghetto for one, this book should of been based on the their friends Courtney and Floyd talking about other side of the pillow he was the dog, while Courtney is being the excellent housewife.......I guess Zane got smart nice title fooled us.......if your looking for a good book filled with drama and twists and turns this is not the book for you but if you're a reader than it will be one to add to the collection
