Great REBT book

This is a good book covering the basics of Rational Emotive Behaviour Theory. Its a proven method of learning to behave and react in a more rational manner.
The ABC approach is very helpful.
This book doesn't talk about addiction but it does talk about many other common problems like Anxiety, depression and anger.
If you want to understand yourself and change destructive behaviour this is a clear systematic and practical way to do so.

If you buy one self-help book, this should be it

If you are anxious and/or depressed, read and re-read (and re-read again) this book. Works best in conjunction with The Feeling Good Handbook by David Burns. Froggatt systematically lays out how most of what is ailing you (guilt, depression, anger, lack of assertiveness, perfectionism, etc.) are all branches of the same tree. They all have their roots in what he calls self-image anxiety (often mistakenly referred to as low self-esteem).
He also points out how it's not "cognitive distortions" that make you feel bad, but instead your "evaluations" of those distortions. For example, you may be worried that someone will get mad at you. That could be "distorted," in that they're unlikely to actually get mad at you. But there's always a chance that they will, in fact, get mad. Your fears may come true. So the way to really feel better is to realize that, even if they get mad, it will not be a catastrophe (check out his very helpful catastrophe scale).
A life-changing book, but it does require several readings.

Not a pop psychology book…jam packed with concepts and examples for managing emotions... should be taught in every classroom and home, from toddlerhood through adulthood, and given to every new parent. The world would be a more peaceful place if the concepts for managing emotions were common knowledge.
