Exactly as Advertised - Timeless, Good Quality, Tons of Illustrations

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia (text only) by C. S. Lewis,P. Baynes I bought this copy because for one, I personally did not want a "movie tie-in" version, I wanted to have a hardcover edition that contained all of the books in one that I could keep for years and pass down to my children - in short, good quality, tasteful, with pictures.

It was described as being "Used - Good", but it arrived in excellent condition (no noticeable tears on the book itself with only slight page wear). This version came with a book jacket which is identical to the hard cover itself, so I threw away the jacket which was well worn. Also, the book description says "text only", which is strange, because this copy has tons of the original illustrations in full-color (I'll try to post pictures soon).

I feel like I hit the jackpot with this purchase and I highly encourage everyone to get this copy ASAP, because I've noticed the price of the "all-in-one" books skyrocketing lately (Barnes and Noble used to have a "leather"-bound copy for $20 three years ago which is $100 now). I sure hope these books don't go out of print, but if they do, you'll be glad you purchased this particular version, because it'll be passed down the family.

The hardcover edition is just one book!

Beware of the difference between the hardcover and softcover of this edition: the hardcover is a single volume, and the softcover is a boxed set!

But, with that out of the way, these books are some of the most delightful and thought-provoking stories you will ever encounter. I fell in love with them as a child, and still consider them among my favorite works of fiction—now I get to introduce a new generation of young readers to them, who I hope will enjoy them as much as I did at their age! C.S. Lewis is truly a master storyteller who incorporates important observations of human nature and lessons of morality and faith into a world of magic and endless possibilities.

Nice One-File Version of the Chronicles of Narnia

I wanted to have all seven Chronicles-of-Narnia books in a single ebook, and that's exactly what this product delivers.

When I pre-ordered this item several months in advance, I was fortunate enough to find it on sale for $12--a real bargain. Upon its release, it was priced at $44.99, which I think is high for a digital box set like this. Fortunately, the price recently dropped to $24.99, which is a decent buy. By comparison, one can currently acquire the seven separate books at $5.98 each and spend just under $42 (not counting any sales tax that might apply). Of course, someone who really wants Boxen (not of interest to me) would still have to get that somewhere else.

Based on the publisher's description of this box set, I was afraid there wouldn't be any illustrations at all. I was pleased to discover that the publisher included one illustration at the beginning of each chapter in each book. The other in-line illustrations found throughout the text of the individual ebooks were omitted in this edition, which is aimed at older readers, according to the publisher. I was glad that at least some of the illustrations were included in this edition. However, since I would have preferred that this edition include all of the same illustrations as the seven separate ebooks, I have taken away one star.

If you are a Narnia fan and, like me, prefer to have collections of related books in a single ebook to reduce the clutter on your Kindle, I recommend this edition--so long as you don't mind that not all of the illustrations are included. If you're an older reader like me and just want a nice, convenient way to re-read the Chronicles of Narnia, this should meet that need quite nicely. However, if you're buying the Chronicles of Naria primarily to read to your children or grandchildren, and you want to show them the illustrations as you go along, I recommend sticking with the individual ebooks, which include the complete illustrations, even though that will likely mean spending more.

Markets fully explained

Financial Institutions and Markets by Meir Kohn is, in my estimation, an astonishing compilation that describes everything relative to the marketplace, from banking to debt markets and to equity markets.

The inside liner note states the book is intended for use alongside an undergraduate or master's course in finance. But I, being of neither, purchased the book as a stand-alone. I am pleased with my decision to buy the book and have found it is well organized and easy to read. Only on rare occasion did I find any mathematical rigor (calculating coupon payments and so on). Nearly all of the book, however, is plain text that explains the markets.

Some highlights include: four ways that businesses raise capital for investment, what commercial paper is and what it has to do with money market funds, what swaps are and how they are used, mortgage strips, stock exchanges, call auctions, the role of market makers, and many more.

The book is quite lengthy. I initially skipped the banking, debt, and insurance chapters and went right to the section that described the stock market. Having satisfied that, I am now backfilling the rest of the book and have been content if not surprised with the directness and clarity the author has provided on all subjects.

Great book for beginners !

I got this book as a gift from a friend as I am teaching some non-english speakers the ABCs of travel English. And he thought this book might come very handy for me . It does. The book contains more than ten chapters,all organized in the same order a tourist will face once he/she steps on a foreign land. From airport check-in to shpping and dinning out, I can find almost everyting they need to master in order to travel by themselves in an English-speaking country. Each chapter has a brief introduction first , then lists several questions and answers related to the subject of the chapter, for instance, how to answer questions from a security agent etc. . The only thing missing in the book is a glossary. Except for that, this is an awesome book for a beginner who wants to travel to America on his/her own. Thank you, Janet :)

Caught up in the hostility surrounding the school's integration, Sephy attempts to be a public friend and makes things worse. Readers familiar with racial issues in this country will see familiar patterns as Callum struggles with the hostility of his family as well as those outside. But in this world, the second-class citizens have turned to terrorism. Callum's older brother, denied schooling, has joined the Liberation Army. Caught up in escalating violence, Callum's family disintegrates, and there seems little for him to do but go the terrorist route as well. Over the years, Callum and Sephy drift apart, but their love remains. The teens take turns telling their story, and the parallels with Romeo and Juliet are clear. Some awkwardness in writing does not detract from the drama and suspense. His best friend, Sephy, a black Cross, comes from a privileged family for whom Callum's mother works. A misunderstanding leads to her firing, but Callum and Sephy maintain deep affection for one another. After Callum gets into Sephy's previously all-black high school, the world begins to close in on them. The premise--what would happen if societal roles were reversed--is not unfamiliar, but the way Blackman personalizes it makes for a thrilling, heartbreaking story. The tale unfolds in 117 short chapters, alternately narrated by Sephy and Callum, and readers will watch with something akin to horror as the teenagers try to sustain what has become love through serpentine wrong turns and events beyond their control: Sephy's do-gooder efforts, the suicide of Callum's sister, and Callum's family's turn to violence. Both fate and family conspire to keep the teens apart as the story winds to its inexorable conclusion. Gripping and deeply layered, this book will make readers question everything: race relations, government, friendship. Very Original

While not a work of historical fiction, Malorie Blackman’s first book in a dark series (currently spanning four novels) sheds light on numerous, many times ugly, truths of past and present, as well as universal human nature. Her ability to tackle some of the bleakest topics of western history in a present day setting, with roles being completely reversed, is to be applauded. An effort to delve this deep into issues of racism, slavery, and segregation while performing a 180 on the historical record is unprecedented.

Whites enslaved blacks. Whites kidnapped blacks from their homes in Africa, took them far from home, family, and familiarity, and forced them to work without pay under the harshest of conditions. Blacks were eventually freed. Whites still viewed them as inferior. Years of segregation and unequal rights prevailed. Now all men (and women) are created equal, at least in the court of law. Prejudice and racism still persist, although on an individual rather than an institutionalized scale. This is where we are currently in history. These are the facts. Facts that we often don’t like to acknowledge.
When a novel addresses these facts, these issues of segregation and racism, and is written by a white author, it is often viewed in an apologetic sense. When a novel addresses issues of segregation and racism, and is written by a black author, it is often viewed as an ode to injustice, a rehashing of issues that have been ‘hashed’ quite enough. Malorie Blackman has broken down all boundaries and crossed all borders in her novel Black & White. Blackman’s novel, originally published in Britain as Naughts & Crosses, has turned history upside down. She has made it possible to cover the cruelest of offenses in a way that does not demonize a particular race, but rather shows the universality of the dark side of humanity. In Blackman’s novel, the Crosses are the ruling class, are “closest to God,” and are black. The Naughts, on the other hand, are white and despised. The Naughts have been free for years, but segregation and deeply ingrained racism and hatred are running rampant in an increasingly unstable society.
Blackman’s use of the black man as the oppressor, and the fact that she herself is black, opens up doors closed to authors who follow the historical record more closely. This is a dark novel, which touches on love and the value of life, but also features suicide, alcoholism, unplanned pregnancy, political terrorism, execution, domestic violence, adultery, and above all HATE. Book censors will be pleased (or perhaps disappointed) that the fictional terms Naughts and Crosses, and fictional racial slurs, blankers and daggers, cannot be found particularly offensive due to their fictitious status. Readers will be more than aware that blanker is an equivalent to the n-word, only in reference to whites, but since it is not an actual word, and carries no historical baggage, Blackman can print it as many times as she wishes without critics breathing down her neck.
Published as a YA novel, Black & White, is perhaps most appropriate for mature readers age 16 and up. There is no one scene that is particularly heinous that would make this novel “more mature” than other novels that touch on similar themes; it is instead the culmination of one despairing event after another that makes this novel not for the faint of heart.
Somehow Blackman manages to center this novel, covering a plethora of controversial themes, around the friendship and ultimate love story of Sephy and Callum, a Cross girl and a Naught boy. Readers will not be led to a happily ever after, which only serves to strengthen the believability of the story and fictitious society as a whole.
Although unpleasant, readers will be drawn into Blackman’s imagined society and will likely rush straight into Knife Edge, the next installment in the Naughts & Crosses series. Many ends are left loose at the conclusion of Black & White, leaving readers no choice but to purchase the next book if they want to know what happens next in the lives of Sephy and all the other characters that have been introduced (and there are a lot of them). The main weakness of Black & White is the overwhelming number of characters. There are too many characters being portrayed as multifaceted, as gray instead of black or white, for the reader to be able to truly care for or follow all of their stories. In real life, surely most people are gray, but in literature sometimes it helps to have the dependable bad or good character(s).
Black & White will literally jump off of library shelves as soon as word gets out. Teen girls cannot resist a tale of star-crossed lovers, and there is enough action, violence, and suspense for even the most skeptical of boys. All libraries would do well to purchase this original work by Malorie Blackman, as well as the remainder of the series, for this much insight into the human condition is rarely found in one well written novel.

Looking into the reflecting glass

I gave this book 5 stars because I started reading it, thinking I would see a different dynamic in the world if the Europeans had not taken part in imperialism. Needless to say there was no difference sociologically, there was inequality rampant. This book showed how prejudiced mind sets all combine to ultimately (and inevitably) make a racist society. We can directly apply this to real life, and I hope readers of privileged groups could see why the naughts were all antagonistic towards Sephy. She wasn't the direct source of prejudice, but she was one who did not have to feel the harmful effects of being "lesser".

I do feel like the last 100 pages of the book were a little rushed, but I liked how Callum and Sephy changed over the years. I also wished the author described the physical difference between the naughts and crosses to show how that happens everyday in real life inconspicuously.

Loved this book!!! Must Read!

This book took me back to the 1950's and 60's, a time when segregation was being fought by the likes of Rosa Parks, Martin Lurther King Jr., to name a few. I wasn't alive back then, but we have all seen the images of the 4 or 5 black students walking into a all white high school for the first time. I could only imagine what it would of been like to of been one of those students walking up those steps.

This book is about a world where the crosses(blacks) are the first class citizens and the Naughts(whites) are second class. The author has taken history and flipped it on its head. Malorie Blackman did an amazing job bringing this world together, almost to well.

The story focuses on two main characters, Stephy a Cross, and Callum a Naught. The two are childhood friends, by way of Callum's mom being employed by Stephy's parents. The book follows how they manage their forbidden relationship in a world of pressured segregation. See, the Crosses are not to mingle with the Naughts and vice versa.

The prose was simple and flowed beautifully. I read this book in a day, I just couldn't put it down. This is the first book I have read that is narrated by the two main characters. Malorie Blackman did a wonderful job flowing one voice into the other. I was never confused on who was talking.

Warning, if you are looking for a happy ever after, this is not your book. The story is sad and tragic, but also beautiful and heartfelt. I cried several times throughout the book and ugly cried at the end. I loved this story and it has earned a place in my top favorite books of all time.
