Cute and has its funny moments

I don’t really remember how I stumbled across the Honey So Sweet manga series, but when I did I was like “hey this sounds cute, let me see if my library has it! *checks* hey they do, let me go get it!”. Thus I did. Viz is currently in the process of publishing all six volumes, with a new one coming out every three months. The third volume was released at the start of July, which I am currently awaiting for my library to get a copy of for me.

So far, with two of the six volumes read, I’m really enjoying it. It’s fun watching (well, reading…) Kogure and Onsie go from not knowing anything about the other person aside from rumors to being in love with each other. Just like the story itself, the artwork is great too.

If you’re wondering what Honey So Sweet is about, it’s about a girl, Nao Kogure, who had given a boy, Taiga Onsie, an umbrella and box of bandaids back in middle school. (they’re in high school now) She didn’t know him at all, all she knew about him were the rumors – that’s he’s a troublemaker, a delinquent, and that he even harms little animals. In high school they run into each other and Onsie says to Kogure that he’d like to date her. Since she’s scared of him and believes the rumours that he is nothing but trouble, she’s scared and says yes. However, as she soon finds out, none of that is true, and Onsie is one of the sweetest and most caring people on Earth. There are plenty of funny moments in the manga, plus I love how Amu Meguro would randomly go on tangents in the pencil sketch corner of the second volume. Through those pencil sketches I discovered that we both share a love of butts. No, really! It says that!

So yep, I’m definitely liking Honey So Sweet so far!

Nao isn't exactly your typical shojo heroine. Sure, she follows the same formula for most, but she actually confesses her feelings the moment she realizes them. She doesn't angst over them like a lot do. It helps that Onise already likes her but I'm glad she didn't try to make Sou out as a love interest. And that kiss was adorbs ^^

Friendship is the main theme of this volume. Nao and Onise decide making friends is important to them. But when we are introduced to Ayaha Futami, things get complicated. Were this any other shojo, Futami would be the love interest and Onise the second lead that would never be chosen.

Futami and Onise become close friends and at first Futami seems like a good guy. He talks back to his group of friends who were talking badly about Onise and tries to see who he is under the rumors. But at the end, the paneling makes it seem like he has other motives...

Despite the wonderful start to Onise and Nao's relationship as a couple, it seems that Futami might be another love interest. From what we've read of Nao so far, I don't think she'll let Futami get his way or sway her. If anything, I think this will be a lesson for the couple on how to deal with jealousy.

My only complaint is how much Sou dwells on the past regarding Nao. I'm unsure how he feels about her. It seems like he's genuinely happy for Onise and her, but there are times where it seems like he might have feelings for her. And now we have Futami strutting around. Please no love square.

Well, it's shojo. And a pretty realistic one at that.

A Gentle Romance

Honey So Sweet takes a bit of a different turn from most shoujo manga of this type in that the love triangle is quickly resolved rather than dragging on forever with trumped up angst. It's a bit of a relief but I'm also curious where the story will go from here - perhaps more like a Kimi Ni Todoke slice of life focus.

Story: Nao does some soul searching and she begins to realize that Onise has touched her heart. It gives her much needed perspective on her feelings for her step-uncle. But dating isn't easy and both Nao and Onise must fumble through their budding relationship.

Meguro continues her gentle story telling. This isn't an angsty romance so much as a slice of life. So while we don't have a lot of over-the-top drama, there still is a lovely little romance about mistaken appearances. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

No BS and worth way more than the cost of the book!

I am a fan of Dr. Gray, his podcast gives great advice and cuts through the BS to make sure you totally understand how the interview process works. He explains things that would keep you up at night such as, "why didn't I get an interview?"

The 3 mock interviews he gives aways as audio recording is worth way more than the price of the book alone. I think if you really want to demistify the process of the Medical School interview, this is the book to check out. 2 Thumbs up.

Much needed addition to the premed world of info

Dr. Gray found a gap in the pre-med advice industry and expertly filled that gap with The Premed Playbook. I prefer books in print so hopefully this will be in stores soon but I was happy to purchase it on Kindle in the meantime. Premed students are becoming more savvy (many with the help of Dr. Gray's podcasts) which means that the already-competitive field is growing more competitive. This book helps the premed improve an extremely important but often overlooked part of the premed journey. Thanks to Dr. Gray for writing such an informative book and for all the work done to help premeds.

If you want to be prepared, this is the book to read.

This book has a large variety of questions that truly make you think about what your responses would be on interview day. By reading this book you are challenging yourself to dig a little deeper in to your motivation and reasoning behind becoming a doctor so that you can not only know what to say during the interview, but get to know yourself a little better. I am years away from applying to medical school, but by Reading this book I feel I am a little more prepared than others.

Great Little Noir

Penny's life reads like the classic Hollywood cliche. Like so many hopeful actresses before her she came to LA young, beautiful and innocent but age has creeped up on her, the wrinkles are showing and innocence went out the window a long time ago. It's time to face facts, and move on and Penny is determined to do just that. She's got a decent job behind the camera doing makeup, has rid herself of the married man she'd been seeing and found the perfect little bungalow with surprisingly low rent. It's not until her new neighbours inform her that the previous tenant suffered from delusions and died inside of an apparent suicide does the cost make sense. Still, Penny isn't going to allow the past to keep her from settling in. But when strange shadows and tapping from what sounds like inside the walls begin to keep her up at night Penny suspects the past may still be present.

I loved this creepy little psychological noir and was so upset it wasn't a full length novel. Megan Abbott has definitely got a knack for the language of noir and this little morsel has certainly wet my appetite. I'll be checking out her other work for sure! Highly recommend this Bibliomystery, my favourite so far of the five I've reviewed previous.

Nice little short story

This was like a little mini Twilight Zone. I read it and I'm still like shaking my head like WTF? This girl gets this room cheap and its not far from work and she's real excited until she talks to her neighbor and finds out how she has got the room for so cheap. It was a nice short little story, only 71 pages long, and it told a story. I'm not much on short stories, so my review is pretty biased. However, I know there are people who don't have a lot of time to read and who would love this book.

I'm pretty sure that sitting back with a bowl and reading this would definitely enhance your reading experience because this one is kind of out there. I enjoyed it, wish it was longer, and would definitely recommend it.

Megan Abbott can do no wrong!

When Penny, a Hollywood makeup artist, moves into a low priced bungalow, she gets more than she bargained for. Will she find out what happened to the former tenant before the same thing happens to her?

This short story from Megan Abbott is a tale of madness and suicide. Since it's really short, I'm going to skip over the nuts and bolts of the plot. Suffice to say, the Megster ran wild on me yet again, serving up misdirection and possibilities, before kicking me in the groin with the ending. My appetite for more Megan Abbott has been whetted so I really hope she's got another novel simmering.

In this short tale, Megan Abbott proves that she can pack a lot of noir into a short story. 4 out of 5 stars.

A View from the Top

The potential reader of this book should be aware that it probably represents the official, unclassified history of CIA’s counter-terrorism operations from 1998 to 2014. Mike Morell, the books principal author, is a veteran of CIA’s Directorate of Intelligence. He also was part of the senior CIA hierarchy during most of this period. So this book really represents the “war on terror” as seen from a CIA management perspective. This means the book is more big picture than detailed oriented and that it often strives to protect CIA’s institutional image. For this reason Morell is at pains to fuzz over the many controversial issues and events that have plagued CIA during this period such as Iraqi WMD Programs, enhanced interrogations (AKA torture), and the tragedy at Fort Chapman (Khost). Still it is quite an interesting book that shows (sometimes if you read between the lines) how the inner mechanisms of CIA management actually work.
Also the book does provide significant insights such as Morell’s clear and plausible account of the tragic events that occurred in Benghazi (Libya). Since this event is still been thrashed about in the U.S. Congress, Morell’s version is quite relevant. So his disgraceful treatment at the hands of congressmen who clearly let their of hatred of the Obama administration override their judgment and in some cases their rationality.

The most significant chapter of this book actually does not have to do with history, but with the future (Chapter 13, “The Long War Ahead”). In it Morell offers his informed assessment of the threat posed by Islamic Extremism in the form of al Qaeda, ISIS (ISIL), Boko Haram, and similar groups. In this chapter he provides the information on these groups sufficient for the U.S. and its allies to develop a real counter terrorist strategy.
This book is well worth purchasing and pondering.

Solid book from a consumate proffessional

This was a very even handed book full of valuable insights on the war on terror. Mr Morell comes across as an even handed proffessional CIA officer, utterly dedicated to our country and a first hand witness to many important events, decisions and programs which have shaped the war on terror. He was President Bush's daily briefer for the first year of his term, and was in fact the briefer on Aug 6 date of the famous PDB that democrats want you to believe should have prevented 9-11 if only Bush would have taken it seriously. In point of fact the memo on that day had almost zero intelligence value in regards to what , when and where and was instead a general declaration that AQ wanted to attack us. Yeah no s*** Sherlock.

Morell addresses the failure of the intell community to understand the nature of the WMD situation in the run up to the Iraq war. He has a great chapter on how the intelligence which help locate OBL was developed and how President Obama managed the process which lead to the decision to conduct the Abottobad raid.

He also has a chapter on the Senate report about the CIA detention and interrogation program. He really rips the report for inaccuracies, leaps of logic, not well thought out conclusions, and bias. He believes the staffers who wrote the report , wrote what they thought their bosses (democrat Senators) wanted to conclude rather than where the evidence should have lead them. He enumerates many errors of fact, errors of logic and errors of context rife througout the report. He asks and attempts to answer 4 questions about the Enhanced Interrogation Tactics (EITs ) used by the CIA on a limited number of prisoners. Was it legal or was it torture? Was it necessary or not? Was it effective? Was it the right thing to do or not? Reading this chapter gives the reader a better understanding of the whole issue than the deeply flawed Senate report ever could.

In a chapter that liberals will run with , he recounts the history of the Benghazi attack and lays to rest in my mind the idea that the CIA colluded with the political side of the Obama operation to make it seem like the video was the cause of the attack when at the time of the attack the CIA believed differently. In point of fact the CIA initially believed that the series of attacks in Benghazi that night (there were 3) were not heavily preplanned and that the intitial demonstration was influenced by earlier embassy breach in Cairo which was a result of the video. Although the CIA now believes that elements of the Benghazi attack was a planned terror event, it's probably time for republicans to stop the investigations of Benghazi - there is no there there.

I like this book and I like the author. He's no idealogue, I would have no idea whether he is a democrat or republican. He admired both Bush and Obama. In short he's dedicated public service that the country was lucky to have working for us keeping us safe.

I particularly liked the inside story of the hint for Bin Laden

Well written, candid and engaging, an insightful view of international events from one of the country's most respected national security professionals. This is the no bulls**t inside view of the global fight against terrorism. I particularly liked the inside story of the hunt for Bin Laden, which contained many details I hadn't seen before. As gripping as any spy novel, except this one happens to be true. Buy it.

Good content, but Kindle edition not great...

Excellent content and every page completely relevant and well written. The biggest downside however, is the poor picture and table quality in the Kindle edition. Whether viewing on my Kindle 3, my retina display iPad or my HTC One the poor quality really is disappointing for this otherwise premium book. If you're looking for my recommendation: unless the publishers opt for higher resolution pics and images ( which I hope they would do... But doubt it at the same time) then rather get the print copy.

About the Author
Dr. Bernard W. Pipkin is Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern California. He received his doctorate from the University of Arizona and is a licensed geologist and certified engineering geologist in the state of California. After graduation he worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a variety of military and civil projects, from large dams to pioneer roads in rough terrain for microwave sites. He has been a consulting engineering geologist as well as a university teacher since 1965. Dr. Pipkin is past president of the National Association of Geology Teachers and is a Fellow in the Geological Society of America. He hosted the PBS 30-part program Oceanus that won a local Emmy for Best Educational Television Series. In 1995 he shared the Clare Holdredge Award with Richard Proctor from the Association of Engineering Geologists for their book ENGINEERING GEOLOGY PRACTICE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. He currently lectures on geology on cruise ships and at last count, he and his wife Faye have been involved in 26 cruises throughout the world. Dr. Pipkin is a private pilot with a flight instructor's rating; he took many of the aerial photos in the book. They have three grown children and five grandchildren and live south of Los Angeles on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Dr. D.D. "Dee" Trent has been working at, or teaching, geology since 1955. After graduating from college he worked in the petroleum industry where his geologic skills were sharpened with projects in Utah, Arizona, California, and Alaska. When the company decided to send him to Libya he decided it was time to become a college geology teacher. He has taught for 28 years at Citrus Community College in Glendora, California, and along the way has worked for the National Park Service, done field research on glaciers in Alaska and California, visited numerous mines in the United States and Germany, picked up a Ph. D. from the University of Arizona, appeared in several episodes of the PBS telecourse, The Earth Revealed, and served as an adjunct faulty member at the University of Southern California, where he taught field geology. He and his wife raised two children in Claremont, California and when not involved with geology he's either skiing or playing banjo in a dixieland band.

Richard W. Hazlett is the winner of 1996 and 2001 Wig Awards for teaching excellence at Pomona College. He is the first Stephen M. Pauley Chair in Environmental Analysis at the college, receiving this appointment in 2001. His main research interests involve volcanic stratigraphy, igneous petrology and resources, but most recently has been exploring land use issues focusing on the American West. Dr. Hazlett styles himself as transitioning from hard-core geology to environmental studies with a land use/natural resource emphasis. He is a co-author with Bernard Pipkin and Dee D. Paul Bierman is a Professor of Geology and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont. Now in his 14th year at UVM, Paul's areas of expertise include understanding how humans and landscapes interact using the fields of hydrology, chemistry, and geomorphology. He is particularly interested in the impact of humans on the built and natural landscape as well as science education at all levels. Paul teaches a variety of courses including Earth Hazards, Geohydrology, and Geomorphology. He has a BA degree from Williams College and his Ph.D. from the University of Washington. Research interests include the rate of bedrock weathering involves field work in such locations as central Australia and the Canadian arctic. Bierman directs UVM's Cosmogenic Nuclide Extraction Lab -- one of only a handful of laboratories in the country dedicated to the preparation of samples for analysis of 10-Be and 26-Al from pure quartz. He manages the Landscape Change Program, an NSF-supported digital archive of historic Vermont Landscape images used for teaching and research, available at uvm.edu/landscape. Paul's research is funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Geographic Society, and the U.S. Army. In 1996, Paul was awarded the Donath medal as the outstanding young scientist of the year by the Geological Society of America; he has since received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation specifically for integrating scientific education and research. In 2005, Paul was awarded the NSF Distinguished Teaching Scholar award in recognition of his on-going attempts to integrate these two strands of his academic life. Together, Paul, his graduate and undergraduate students, and collaborators have 50 publications in refereed journals and books.

About the Author
The late Lawrence B. Sawyer, JD, CIA, PA, was widely known as one of the most articulate authorities on internal auditing. Indeed, he is often referred to as "the father of modern internal auditing." He gained his knowledge of audit practice in both government (with the U.S. General Accounting Office) and in the aerospace industry. He was the recipient of more major literary and professional awards than any other internal audit practitioner: four Thurston Awards, three Outstanding Contributor Awards, the Cadmus Award, and the Distinguished Service Award. He participated in early revisions of The IIA’s Code of Ethics and the Statement of Responsibilities, and was instrumental in developing the first Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) examination and the original Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing. He continued to be a leader in the internal auditing profession. He published extensively in internal audit publications and wrote several other t! echnical books, one of which (the second edition of The Manager and the Internal Auditor) was published in 1996. Mr. Sawyer was constantly in demand as a speaker on the subject of internal auditing. He was the first recipient of The IIA’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mortimer A. Dittenhofer, Ph.D., CIA, was Professor of Accounting at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. He is a research fellow of The IIA and was the Director of the Master of Accounting Program in Internal Auditing at Florida International University. He has extensive internal auditing experience in industry at Sears and in the federal government at the Atomic Energy Commission. At the U.S. General Accounting Office, he chaired the work group that developed the first edition of the world-renowned Government Audit Standards. He was a two-term member of the committee that developed The IIA’s Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing. He also was the second recipient of The IIA’s Lifetime Achievement Award presented in 2002. He edited a two-volume annual government auditing and accounting update reference series and is coeditor of The IIA’s two case study collections on ethics. He is currently developing a third edition of the case study col! lection.

James H. Scheiner, Ph.D., is Dean of the Walker L. Cisler College of Business and Professor of Business at Northern Michigan University. An award-winning teacher, his primary teaching interests are in auditing and accounting information systems. In addition, he has taught continuing education and staff training for auditors. He is a second-generation Certified Public Accountant. He has published in the leading accounting research journals, coauthored an auditing textbook, and coauthored an education monograph published by the American Accounting Association. He has served as a consultant to governmental and business entities.
